ISBN: 1503552845
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
To sail around the world on Rivendel II, our 43-ft sloop, my husband and I set course for Australia in 1998. Providence landed us in Vanuatu, formerly the New Hebrides, independent since 1980. Rural island villages had lost electric power and communication, as well as transportation, education and healthcare services. Thus we started Project MARC, providing assistance for 10 years supported by many dozens of volunteers, vessels and sponsors. This is a story of adventure, failures and triumphs, as well as our own spiritual journey through these magical islands.

Peace on Bougainville
Author: Rebecca Adams
Publisher: Victoria University Press
ISBN: 9780864734082
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
This is a unique look at the country of Bougainville, its people, their history, and their move toward peace told from the perspectives of the people involved both within and outside of the process. The book traces the peace movement from November 20, 1997, when unarmed monitors from New Zealand, Australia, Vanuatu, and Fiji arrived in Bougainville with the agreement of the Papua New Guinea government and most of the political factions on Bougainville. Their task was to establish a secure atmosphere in which Bougainvilleans could forge their own peaceful solution to the conflict. The individual viewpoints show how the fragile road toward a peaceful outcome was constructed.

Indigenous Pathways into Social Research
Author: Donna M Mertens
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315426676
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 407
Book Description
A new generation of indigenous researchers is taking its place in the world of social research in increasing numbers. These scholars provide new insights into communities under the research gaze and offer new ways of knowing to traditional scholarly models. They also move the research community toward more sensitive and collaborative practices. But it comes at a cost. Many in this generation have met with resistance or indifference in their journeys through the academic system and in the halls of power. They also often face ethical quandaries or even strong opposition from their own communities. The life stories in this book present the journeys of over 30 indigenous researchers from six continents and many different disciplines. They show, in their own words, the challenges, paradoxes, and oppression they have faced, their strategies for overcoming them, and how their work has produced more meaningful research and a more just society.

Being Political
Author: Jack Corbett
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 0824841026
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Politicians everywhere tend to attract cynicism and inspire disillusionment. They are supposed to epitomize the promise of democratic government and yet invariably find themselves cast as the enemy of every virtue that system seeks to uphold. In the Pacific, "politician" has become a byword for corruption, graft, and misconduct. This was not always the case—the independence generation is still remembered as strong leaders—but today's leaders are commonly associated with malaise and despair. Once heroes of self-determination, politicians are now the targets of donor attempts to institute "good governance," while Fiji's 2006 coup was partly justified on the grounds that they needed "cleaning up." But who are these much-maligned figures? How did they come to arrive in politics? What is it like to be a politician? Why do they enter, stay, and leave? Drawing on more than 110 interviews and other published sources, including autobiographies and biographies, Being Political provides a collective portrait of the region's political elite. This is an insider account of political life in the Pacific as seen through the eyes of those who have done the job. We learn that politics is a messy, unpredictable, and, at times, dirty business that nonetheless inspires service and sacrifice. We come to understand how being a politician has changed since independence and consider what this means for how we think about issues of corruption and misconduct. We find that politics is deeply embedded in the lives of individuals, families, and communities; an account that belies the common characterization of democracy in the Pacific as a "façade" or "foreign flower." Ultimately, this is a sympathetic counter-narrative to the populist critique. We come to know politicians as people with hopes and fears, pains and pleasures, vices and virtues. A reminder that politicians are human—neither saints nor sinners—is timely given the wave of cynicism and disaffection. As such, this book is a must read for all those who believe in the promise of representative government.

Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317130030
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
Focusing on cultural change and the socio-political movements in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, this book uses both anthropological and historical analysis to examine the way the relationship between gender and Christianity has shaped processes of social change. Based on extensive research conducted over several decades, it is one of the few books available to focus on Vanuatu and on the impact of Christianity in Melanesia more generally - as well as on the significance of gender relations in understanding these developments. Providing a model for understanding and comparing processes of change in small-scale societies, this fascinating book will appeal to scholars and students interested in the ethnography of Melanesia and in issues related to contemporary cultural change and gender more generally.
