The grounding concept of this book is that youth are active agents in creating cultural practices and social spaces. Drawing from disciplines including anthropology, sociology, education, and cultural studies, the chapters examine practices that youth who are members of traditionally marginalized groups develop through engagement in the varied contexts of their everyday lives. Each chapter treats communities' language, communication and interaction patterns, and culturally derived practices as valuable resources youth bring to the tasks and situations they negotiate across time and space. The combination of chapters that fall within traditions of social and cultural foundations with those that fall within disciplinary learning-focused approaches sets this book apart. Across the chapters, notions of youth as active agents in the production of knowledge, selves, and practice are illuminated by focusing on how youth participate in construction of assemblages of historically derived practices, evolving relations of power, discourses, and new social/cultural forms and practices. The book also includes the editor's responses to the two main sections of the work, a conversation-in-writing aimed at making explicit both what ties the chapters within the sections together and the broader implications of the combined and unique contributions.

This volume features scholars who use a critical geography framework to analyze how constructions of social space shape education reform. In particular, they situate their work in present-day neoliberal policies that are pushing responsibility for economic and social welfare, as well as education policy and practice, out of federal and into more local entities. States, cities, and school boards are being given more responsibility and power in determining curriculum content and standards, accompanied by increasing privatization of public education through the rise of charter schools and for-profit organizations’ incursion into managing schools. Given these pressures, critical geography’s unique approach to spatial constructions of schools is crucially important. Reterritorialization and deterritorialization, or the varying flows of people and capital across space and time, are highlighted to understand spatial forces operating on such things as schools, communities, people, and culture. In this timely study, Jeffrey C. Goldfarb explores the nature and prospects of cultural freedom by examining the conditions that favor or threaten its development in the political East and West. Goldfarb--who examines conditions in the Soviet Union, the United States, and their respective European allies--focuses most closely upon Poland and the United States. He investigates a wide range of concrete cases, including the Polish opposition movement and Solidarity, the migration of artists, the American television and magazine industries, American philanthropy, and communist cultural conveyor belts. From these cases, Goldfarb derives a definitive set of sociological conditions for cultural freedom: critical creativity which resists systematic constraints, continuity of cultural tradition, and a relatively autonomous public realm for the reception of culture. Cultural freedom, Goldfarb shows, is not a static state but a process of achievement. Its parameters and content are determined by social practice in cultural institutions and by their relations with other components and the totality of social structure. So defined, cultural freedom is transformed from an ideological concept into one with real critical and analytical power. Through it we can appreciate the invisible nature of constraint in the West and the unapparent but acting supports of cultural freedom existing in socialist countries.
