Book Description
Excerpt from Yankee School-Teacher in Virginia: A Tale of the Old Dominion in the Transition State One evening in December, 1870, Miss Marian Stone, of Massachusetts, found the little world of Chula Depot, in Virginia, before her. She stood a few minutes in an uncertain mood, watching the departing train, and then looked around her. "This is the 'jumping-off place' I am sure," she murmured. "To think I should have come so far to find it!" The planks of the platform had decayed in places, and she surveyed it apprehensively as she paced along. "I must learn to pick my way; one can walk in spots, at all events." She reached the end, and stood there surveying the scenery - a log structure a few rods away, which she reflected about, finally deciding that it was a blacksmith's, although there were no signs of business. Across the road was a small frame building with a rudely painted sign, "J. R. Mason's Store," a fringe of little black boys outside, and a stout, tall negress turbaned with a yellow kerchief, who stooped to enter the low, open doorway.
