Book Description
“Offers practical guidance for how to work with diverse others, which is a precondition for confronting many of the complex challenges we face.” —Morris Rosenberg, President, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Collaboration is increasingly difficult and increasingly necessary. Often, to get something done that really matters to us, we need to work with people we don’t agree with or like or trust. Adam Kahane has faced this challenge many times, working on big issues like democracy and jobs and climate change and on everyday issues in organizations and families. He has learned that our conventional understanding of collaboration—that it requires a harmonious team that agrees on where it’s going, how it’s going to get there, and who needs to do what—is wrong. Instead, we need a new approach to collaboration that embraces discord, experimentation, and genuine cocreation—which is exactly what Kahane provides in this groundbreaking and timely book. “Kahane shows that people who don’t see eye-to-eye really can come together to solve big challenges. Whether in our businesses, our governments, our communities, or our personal lives, we can all benefit from this smart and timely book.” —Mark Tercek, former President, The Nature Conservancy and coauthor of Nature’s Fortune “Shows us how thinking and seeing differently can help us navigate this challenging landscape. Kahane abandons orthodoxy in taking on the most intransigent problems, showing us the path to effective action in a complex world.” —James Gimian, coauthor of The Rules of Victory “Collaborating with the Enemy belongs on the same shelf as Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Machiavelli’s The Prince.” —Stephen Huddart, President, The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation

Working for the Enemy
Author: Reinhold Billstein
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 9781845450137
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
General Motors, the largest corporation on earth today, has been the owner since 1929 of Adam Opel AG, Russelsheim, the maker of Opel cars. Ford Motor Company in 1931 built the Ford Werke factory in Cologne, now the headquarters of European Ford. In this book, historians tell the astonishing story of what happened at Opel and Ford Werke under the Third Reich, and of the aftermath today. Long before the Second World War, key American executives at Ford and General Motors were eager to do business with Nazi Germany. Ford Werke and Opel became indispensable suppliers to the German armed forces, together providing most of the trucks that later motorized the Nazi attempt to conquer Europe. After the outbreak of war in 1939, Opel converted its largest factory to warplane parts production, and both companies set up extensive maintenance and repair networks to help keep the war machine on wheels. During the war, the Nazi Reich used millions of POWs, civilians from German-occupied countries, and concentration camp prisoners as forced laborers in the German homefront economy. Starting in 1940, Ford Werke and Opel also made use of thousands of forced laborers. POWs and civilian detainees, deported to Germany by the Nazi authorities, were kept at private camps owned and managed by the companies. In the longest section of the book, ten people who were forced to work at Ford Werke recall their experiences in oral testimonies. For more than fifty years, legal and political obstacles frustrated efforts to gain compensation for Nazi-era forced labor; in the most recent case, a $12 billion lawsuit was filed against the computer giant I.B.M. by a group of Gypsy organizations. In 1998, former forced laborers filed dozens of class action lawsuits against German corporations in U.S. courts. The concluding chapter reviews the subsequent, immensely complex negotiations towards a settlement - which involved Germany, the United States, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Czech Republic, Israel and several other countries, as well as dozens of well-known German corporations.

The Works of the Enemy(Satan and His Demonic Forces)
Author: Robert Antwi
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1496972643
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 141
Book Description
Satan and his forces are waging a war against humanity, but the sad thing is, many Christians are not aware of the extent of this warfare. This a spiritual warfare, and the Bible teaches a lot about the works of the enemy and the spiritual warfare, so I decided to write on this topic to bring light to what Satan and his forces are doing in this world. The works of the enemy, what Satan and his demonic forces are doing, are well outlined in this book, and I have backed every work of the enemy with the Word of God. Satan and his forces are working twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, four weeks a month, and twelve months a year. They work all the year, without any vacation. The major work of the enemy is to get Christians to sin against God and to diminish their faith in God. In the world, Satan is using money, sex, and power to keep many people from knowing God through his Son, Jesus Christ. Money is the root of all evil, so many evil and untold hardship come to fruitful in the name of money. Satan and his forces are working in all the four corners around the world to keep people away from knowing God. One may be praying on a topic for a long time without any answer, then, the enemy will tell you that your God cannot answer your prayers, and if you listen to the enemy, then your faith in God will diminish. Whatever God hates is what Satan loves; for example, God says, I hate divorce, and Satan will say, I love divorce. Satan may keep you not only in poverty but in debt. Satan may take away your health, which may come along with sadness and depression. Satan is crafty and cunning, so we may only attack him in the name, which is above any other name in heaven or on earth or under the earth, which is Jesus Christ. As you read on, you are going to see how the enemy is fighting the spiritual warfare with his demonic forces. The Bible tells us how Christians will be able to wage this spiritual warfare against Satan and his forces. Looking at Ephesians 6:1217, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; And above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Christians are to put on the armor of truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, helmet of salvation, and the Word of God in order to wage the spiritual warfare against Satan and his forces. This will be more explained as you read on. It is my prayer that you will be able to know more about the works of the enemy and be able to pray effectively to destroy the works of the enemy in your life and the world around you.

How to Have an Enemy
Author: Melissa Florer-Bixler
Publisher: Herald Press
ISBN: 9781513808147
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Does Jesus’ call to love our enemies mean that we should remain silent in the face of injustice? Jesus called us to love our enemies. But to befriend an enemy, we first have to acknowledge their existence, understand who they are, and recognize the ways they are acting in opposition to God’s good news. In How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace, Melissa Florer-Bixler looks closely at what the Bible says about enemies—who they are, what they do, and how Jesus and his followers responded to them. The result is a theology that allows us to name our enemies as a form of truth-telling about ourselves, our communities, and the histories in which our lives are embedded. Only then can we grapple with the power of the acts of destruction carried out by our enemies, and invite them to lay down their enmity, opening a path for healing, reconciliation, and unity. Jesus named and confronted his enemies as an essential part to loving them. In this provocative book, Florer-Bixler calls us to do the same.

Brief Encounters with the Enemy
Author: Saïd Sayrafiezadeh
Publisher: Bantam
ISBN: 0812993586
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
"An unnamed American city feeling the effects of a war waged far away and suffering from bad weather is the backdrop for this startling work of fiction. The protagonists are aimless young men going from one blue collar job to the next, or in a few cases, aspiring to middle management. Their everyday struggles--with women, with the morning commute, with a series of cruel bosses--are somehow transformed into storytelling that is both universally resonant and wonderfully uncanny. That is the unsettling, funny, and ultimately heartfelt originality of Saïd Sayrafiezadeh's short fiction, to be at home in a world not quite our own but with many, many lessons to offer us"--

Conspiring with the Enemy
Author: Yvonne Chiu
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231544170
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
Despite the strong influence of just war theory in military law and practice, warfare is commonly considered devoid of morality. Yet even in the most horrific of human activities, there is frequent communication and cooperation between enemies. One remarkable example is the Christmas truce—unofficial ceasefires between German and English trenches in December 1914 in which soldiers even mingled in No Man’s Land. In Conspiring with the Enemy, Yvonne Chiu offers a new understanding of why and how enemies work together to constrain violence in warfare. Chiu argues that what she calls an ethic of cooperation is found in modern warfare to such an extent that it is often taken for granted. The importance of cooperation becomes especially clear when wartime ethics reach a gray area: To whom should the laws of war apply? Who qualifies as a combatant? Should guerrillas or terrorists receive protections? Fundamentally, Chiu shows, the norms of war rely on consensus on the existence and content of the laws of war. In a wide-ranging consideration of pivotal instances of cooperation, Chiu examines weapons bans, treatment of prisoners of war, and the Geneva Conventions, as well as the tensions between the ethic of cooperation and the pillars of just war theory. An original exploration of a crucial but overlooked phenomenon, Conspiring with the Enemy is a significant contribution to military ethics and political philosophy.
