This book presents a unified optimal control approach to a large class of problems arising in the field of production planning and scheduling. It introduces a leading optimal flow control paradigm which results in efficient solutions for planning and scheduling problems. This book also introduces the reader to analytical and numerical methods of the maximum principle, used here as a mathematical instrument in modeling and solving production planning and scheduling problems. The book examines control of production flows rather than sequencing of distinct jobs. Methodologically, this paradigm allows us to progress from initial assumptions about a manufacturing environment, through mathematical models and construction of numerical methods, up to practical applications which prove the relevance of the theory developed here to the real world. Given a manufacturing system, the goal is to control the production, subject to given constraints, in such a way that the demands are tracked as closely as possible. The book considers a wide variety of problems encountered in actual production planning and scheduling. Among the problems are production flow sequencing and timing, capacity expansion and deterioration, subcontracting and overtime. The last chapter is entirely devoted to applications of the theory to scheduling production flows in real-life manufacturing systems. (Uncorrected OCR) Summary The production control of manufacturing systems is at the heart of the whole manufacturing process, and such control involves a series of real-time scheduling decisions regarding different discrete production operations. Thus, improving the effectiveness of production-control systems is of vital importance. The use of stochastic control theory to find the optimal or near-optimal solutions of production-control problems is greatly facilitated by using continuous-flow models to approximate the discrete flows in manufacturing systems. However, past research showed that such problems are very difficult to solve either analytically or numerically by such means. In order to simplify the problems, some restrictive assumptions (such as long-run constant demands and exponentially distributed machine failures) were made in this previous theoretical work, but even so analytical solutions were obtained only for simple systems containing single machines producing single product-types. Evolutionary algorithms are used in this thesis to develop practical solutions for these analytically intractable production-control problems in two different ways, namely, crisp-logic control and fuzzy-logic control. In the case of crisp-logic control, an evolutionary stochastic optimisation procedure is developed to estimate the optimal short-run inventory levels for finished-products and work-in-progress buffers (i.e., hedging points) for manufacturing systems with constant demands under closed-loop control. This methodology is illustrated by examples of manufacturing systems with different configurations (single machines, multiple machines, single product-types, and multiple product-types), and the results are validated by comparing them to the theoretically optimal i results (where such results are available). The evolutionarily optimised short-run inventory levels are also used to construct gain-scheduled adaptive controllers, and it is shown that such controllers ca.

It deals with the optimal control of a one-machine multiple-product manufacturing system with setup changes, operating in a continuous time dynamic environment. The system is deterministic. When production is switched from one product to the other, a known constant setup time and a setup cost are incurred. Each product has specified constant processing time and constant demand rate, as well as an infinite supply of raw material. The problem was formulated as a feedback control problem. The optimal solution provides the optimal production rate and setup switching epochs as a function of the state of the system (backlog and inventory levels). For the steady state, the optimal cyclic schedule was determined. To solve the transient case, the system's state space was partitioned into [n(n-1)/2], where n is the number of products, mutually exclusive regions such that with each region, the optimal control policy was determined analytically.
