There are 3 components; this paper reports on the second component, which involved 2 parts. Part A explored women's experiences, with interviews with women who had experienced mental health problems and sexual violence. It examined the factors that increase the likelihood that women who experience sexual violence develop later mental health problems, or that women with mental health problems experience sexual violence, and their pathways to safety and care. Part B draws on these findings and workshops with practitioners and management to identify what factors influence the design and implementation of an integrated systems model of care for such women.

A health-care provider is likely to be the first professional contact for survivors of intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Evidence suggests that women who have been subjected to violence seek health care more often than non-abused women, even if they do not disclose the associated violence. They also identify health-care providers as the professionals they would most trust with disclosure of abuse.
