The first state newspaper published under a woman's name was boycotted and failed in 1853. But from the passage of the 14th amendment in 1866 to Wisconsin's ratification of the 19th amendment in 1919, women were never at a loss for words or a newspaper to print them. Women's news won a new respectability under feminine bylines and led to the historic victory for women's suffrage. McBride undertakes the task of considering feminist reform as a conceptual whole.

Yet there’s a complex and fascinating history behind the popularity of biking in Wisconsin—one that until now has never been told.
