Book Description
Travel back to the earliest days of Woburn, when life was simple and farming was the chief occupation of its settlers. Then, continue your journey as Woburn transforms itself into a small industrialized city on the brink of the twentieth century. Founded in 1640 by a team of seven able men from Charlestown, Woburn grew, prospered, recorded, and documented its history, providing a legacy for generations to come. Through the weaving of stories and photographs, we witness this growth and marvel at the transformation of village to city. As you delve into these intimate glimpses of Woburn, you will be introduced to rare photographs of Civil War combatants and view significant historical documents, such as the "Bloody Butchery" broadside, which details the battles of Lexington and Concord replete with Woburn heroes. You will be mesmerized by the old-time photographs of landmarks such as "Busy Bend" and "Horn Pond." You will see a Woburn "celebrated for its greenhouses, tanneries, and ice-cutting industries." And you will meet Woburn's celebrities: the famous, the not so famous, and the infamous.

Book Description
Although it is only thirteen square miles in size, Woburn boasts a vast history, replete with curious episodes and colourful characters. The town was home to three women accused of witchcraft in the infamous Salem witch trials, and it was the choice camping ground of gypsy queen Marcia Mock in 1917. Discover the nefarious yeggmen who prowled the streets at the beginning of the twentieth century and the seven women known as the Robins, whose friendship inspired a chain letter that has survived for more than fifty years. Woburn: Hidden Tales of a Tannery Town explores the mysteries of Woburns landscape, including the deadly Horn Pond, whose waters swallowed more than fifty victims and were long believed to contain vengeful demons. Columnist Marie Coady reveals Woburns best-kept secrets with the vibrancy and wit of a true town sleuth.

Book Description
Woburn High School has instilled the importance of education in generations of students for over 160 years. The school opened its doors in 1852 with thirty-four students in a leased room at the Knight Building on Main Street. Increasing enrollment and curriculum requirements necessitated the building of a larger school on Main Street in 1854 and again in 1906 at the Dow Farm property on Montvale Avenue. Woburn's reputation as a leading leather manufacturer during the Civil War inspired the Tanner nickname, bull mascot and school motto: "Tanner Pride." With the leadership of thirteen principals throughout its history, over thirty-two thousand students have graduated from this school. Today, more than half the faculty are returning alumni, and generations of Woburn families continue to send their children to this school. Join author Susan Thifault as she explores a history of pride and tradition at Woburn High School.
