Book Description
Excerpt from Chateau Frissac: Or, Home Scenes in France Four silvery notes had just emanated from a hand some clock, which stood on the chimney piece of a. Large and beautifully furnished room, when a door was thrown hastily open to give entrance to a gentle man, dressed with all the elegance Of the present day. He glanced quickly around, and seeing no one, seated himself with every sign of impatience and anxious disquietude. The room, I said, was large and beautifully furnished; but the furniture was of an ancient style, and the damask curtains, though rich and heavy, were somewhat faded by time. The faateaz'l into which the Marquis (for such was his rank) had thrown himself, was covered with that miraculous loom painting called the Gobelin Ta pestry. A rosy little shepherdess snatching an apple (ruddy cheeked as herself) from her amorous Swain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Marie de France (fl. late twelfth century) is the earliest known French woman poet and her lais - stories in verse based on Breton tales of chivalry and romance - are among the finest of the genre. Recounting the trials and tribulations of lovers, the lais inhabit a powerfully realized world where very real human protagonists act out their lives against fairy-tale elements of magical beings, potions and beasts. De France takes a subtle and complex view of courtly love, whether telling the story of the knight who betrays his fairy mistress or describing the noblewoman who embroiders her sad tale on the shroud for a nightingale killed by a jealous and suspicious husband.

Book Description
Floris and Blancheflour is the name of a popular romantic story that was told in the Middle Ages in many different vernacular languages and versions. It first appears in Europe around 1160 in "aristocratic" French. Roughly between the period 1200 and 1350 it was one of the most popular of all the romantic plots. The Middle English version of the poem derives from an Old French "aristocratic" version but differs somewhat in details. The opening section concerning how the two are born is missing from the English versions. Originally it dates to around 1250 and was called Floris and Blanchefleur.
