The Screen was similar to that at Haddon Hall. Unfortunately, this Hall has been cut up into rooms, and the screens and gallery destroyed. As will be seen by the illustration, the Guest Chamber behind the eastern oriel window has been pulled down, and the whole interior of what is left has been modernised to suit the requirements of a farmhouse. The house is surrounded by a moat. The two oriels are very beautiful, and give a dignified appearance to what is generally a reposeful design. That there were others built at the same time in the parish is unquestionable (although vestiges of the work of that period only appear in two other farmhouses, viz. 2 - Pevenhill Farm and the Ponds at Purton Stoke), for the records show that many families of good position were then residing in Purton. Of the early history of restrop we know nothing. Who was the builder and who were the first resi dents are questions that cannot yet be answered. There is a bare mention of the name, as a boundary, in a deed relating to the general inclosure, but beyond that there is nothing to tell, and yet it is as pure and good a specimen of Elizabethan architecture as could be found. The Brydges family owned the Church Farm1 and also the historic Nele's Place; the Sadlers were at Perenhill, and the Maskelynes at the Down. The Digges.
