Also heard that Mrs. Fleming is moving from her home. Is meeting with Fleming's agent and Mr. Edgar today to discuss possible rent. Reports there is a house belonging to a Mr. Rynlander on the North River near Partition Street, although he thinks Henry will not like it. Is satisfied that Henry did not have a connection with Green, as his reputation has been damaged recently over an incident involving erasure on a note of hand. Colonel Platt informed him that Mr. Lawrence is to give 350 pounds a year for his house. Postscript says Shaw and Randall will sail in two days. Reports that Isaac Sears made it to New York from London in 63 days. Date taken from postscript, which was marked Monday. GLC02437.05799, another letter from William to Henry Knox, is marked as Tuesday Morng 29th Jany 93.

Called on William Duer yesterday who reported that Billy Morris was directed by Mr. C. to make the written report he did respecting the Eastern lands. Writes, People in general here appear to be sorry at your intention of retiring (which I have neither confirmed or denied) it is universally circulated - and it was last night mentioned that Mr. [Alexander] Hamilton had concluded to do the same. Continues the letter on 26 January and reports seeing Governor William Paterson in Brunswick, New Jersey. Says he observed that the Southern opposition to Government would end in nothing. Paterson said he would hold out the prospect of separation with them, which would scare them and bring them back to reason. Free stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Says that a mutual acquaintance has no exalted opinion of Mr. G. although he could not say any thing against him either respecting his personal character or that he has not a large property. Relates that he spoke to Mrs. Fleming again about her house, but she is still determined to let it for 400 a year for 3 years. Reports that Isaac Clason, a merchant, is about to buy up Macomb's debt at 5/6 to the pound. Does not see William Duer taking any measures to extricate himself. Notes that Duer's wife is going to be on Long Island after 1 May. Assumes this letter will take some time getting to Henry, as there is a bad snowstorm at the moment.

Seems to be saying that Mr. Hitchburn still owes Knox 2,000 pounds for the house, which it appears that he has purchased. Mr. Hitchburn is also discussed, along with the house, in GLC02437.00565. Asks Henry if Mr Rea should paint any saddle clothes for him, states he has not yet procured a silk handkerchief, and cannot find Mr. Garey's promissory note. Notes that the brig Cabot was captured by the British ship HMS Millford. In March the Cabot was engaged by the Milford outside Boston and chased North to Novia Scotia, where the crew abandoned the ship and escaped unharmed. The ship became the first Continental naval ship captured by the British. William also says that Pollard has informed him 1000 men have left to fight in the south. The quills and other items he purchased have arrived and are already selling well.
