Book Description
From 1897 to 1917 the red-light district of Storyville commercialized and even thrived on New Orleans's longstanding reputation for sin and sexual excess. This notorious neighborhood, located just outside of the French Quarter, hosted a diverse cast of characters who reflected the cultural milieu and complex social structure of turn-of-the-century New Orleans, a city infamous for both prostitution and interracial intimacy. In particular, Lulu White—a mixed-race prostitute and madam—created an image of herself and marketed it profitably to sell sex with light-skinned women to white men of means. In Spectacular Wickedness, Emily Epstein Landau examines the social history of this famed district within the cultural context of developing racial, sexual, and gender ideologies and practices. Storyville's founding was envisioned as a reform measure, an effort by the city's business elite to curb and contain prostitution—namely, to segregate it. In 1890, the Louisiana legislature passed the Separate Car Act, which, when challenged by New Orleans's Creoles of color, led to the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896, constitutionally sanctioning the enactment of "separate but equal" laws. The concurrent partitioning of both prostitutes and blacks worked only to reinforce Storyville's libidinous license and turned sex across the color line into a more lucrative commodity. By looking at prostitution through the lens of patriarchy and demonstrating how gendered racial ideologies proved crucial to the remaking of southern society in the aftermath of the Civil War, Landau reveals how Storyville's salacious and eccentric subculture played a significant role in the way New Orleans constructed itself during the New South era.

Book Description
The criminal legal system defines and authoritatively enacts the boundaries of permissible and impermissible behaviour, with a focus on that which is prohibited or transgressive. Wickedness and Crime: Laws of Homicide and Malice seeks to expose the ways in which criminal law communicates and sanctions particular models of wickedness. This book illuminates the intimate relationship of crime and definitions of wrongdoing. A central contention of the book is that if a criminal legal system empty of normative content is undesirable and implausible, then we must think critically about the types of models of wickedness that are communicated by criminal legal doctrine. Through historical and contemporary analysis of the legal concept of malice, Penny Crofts examines the types of models of wickedness that are established through criminal legal doctrine. The book draws upon literature, philosophy and jurisprudence to place wickedness at the centre of an account of criminal law. Arguing that the current dominant idea of wickedness communicated in criminal law lacks nuance and clarity, this book examines the implications in terms of the legal subject, social responsibility and the jurisdiction of the legal system. Through historical accounts of malice the book provides resources to enrich a contemporary jurisprudence of blaming. A fascinating contribution to the study of law, this book will interest criminal legal scholars who seek a deeper understanding of the complexity of the relationship between law and morality. The book also provides a resource for legal theorists and philosophers of wickedness, supplying a sustained example and analysis of the implications of types of models of culpability.

There shall be no more delay! When Daniel prayed in the book of Daniel 10, the answers to his prayers were immediately released but was mysteriously delayed. Why? The spiritual demon of Persia wrestled with the angel that was sent to deliver the answer to DanielaEUR(tm)s prayer. Unknown to Daniel, there was a fierce battle in the heavenlies between GodaEUR(tm)s angel, and this demon until Michael, the archangel of God, was sent to help him. Remember, the Bible warns us in Ephesians 6:12 that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual host of wickedness operating in the high places. We are dealing with an enemy whose job is to steal, kill, and destroy every good thing God has released to us. Daniel was, however, persistent for three weeks, praying and fasting until his breakthrough came. There are many people whose blessings are being delayed by the powers of wickedness. What you need to do is to become more aggressive and persistent in your prayers. Many have, unfortunately, given up. Praying aggressively with the psalms is designed to help believers regain their spiritual strength. It helps them violently counter these evil powers so that their blessings will not be delayed any longer. The prophet, Ezekiel, prophesized in Ezekiel 12:28, aEURoeThis is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign LordaEUR! Using these psalm prayers together with the meditation, I encourage you to prophesize like Ezekiel. Say with me, aEURoeEvery blessing released to me by God but has yet to manifest, thus says the Lord, aEUR~THERE SHALL BE NO MORE DELAY.aEUR(tm)aEUR MANIFEST NOW! In the name of Jesus!
