Book Description
A hardboiled valentine to the Golden State, That Left Turn at Albuquerque marks the return of noir master Scott Phillips. Douglas Rigby, attorney-at-law, is bankrupt. He’s just sunk his last $200,000—a clandestine “loan” from his last remaining client, former bigshot TV exec Glenn Haskill—into a cocaine deal gone wrong. The lesson? Never trust anyone else with the dirty work. Desperate to get back on top, Rigby formulates an art forgery scheme involving one of Glenn’s priceless paintings, a victimless crime. But for Rigby to pull this one off, he’ll need to negotiate a whole cast of players with their own agendas, including his wife, his girlfriend, an embittered art forger, Glenn’s resentful nurse, and the man’s money-hungry nephew. One misstep, and it all falls apart—will he be able to save his skin? Written with hard-knock sensibility and wicked humor, Scott Phillips’s newest novel will cement him as one of the great crime writers of the 21st century.

Book Description
From the festival founder's boast at a party in 1971 that he could fly his newly bought balloon, to an annual celebration that now draws more than half a million people to New Mexico, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a story of good times and friendships formed over decades of ballooning. An average of 700 balloonists from scores of nations participate in the October event, lifting off with the rising sun in the crisp Albuquerque air and floating against the turquoise skies and salmon-pink Sandaia Mountains. Traditional balloons mix with specially designed balloons such as shade-wearing suns and Darth Vader to thrill the tens of thousands of spectators below. The excitement continues into the nights with balloon glows and fireworks. More than 150 images capture the colors, crowds, and camaraderie that have made Albuquerque the ballooning capital of the world. -- page 4 of cover.

Book Description
Albuquerque Then and Now matches vintage photographs with contemporary shots, documenting the change from a popular motel stop on Route 66 to a modern hi-tech city specializing in health care. Albuquerque has survived through Spanish, Mexican, and American rule. A thriving tourist industry rode in on the railroad in 1880 and grew with "tin can tourists" passing through on Route 66. The vast majority of roadside motels and auto courts are gone now (Aztec), but some (El Vado) have been repurposed, and a handful (Luna Lodge) struggle on. A building boom in the 1930s and 1940s left the city with many original Art Deco structures, as well as the fantastic Pueblo Deco of the KiMo Theatre. There are also many examples of Mission Revival Style architecture and other historic adobe buildings. Today the city is known for its sophisticated medical care, first established during the tuberculosis epidemic; for its technological facilities, seeded by World War II; and for its cosmopolitan ambience. Plus it provided the locations for the global hit Netflix series, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

Book Description
Sean Gandert paints a startling dystopia that will resonate with fans of Station Eleven and A Visit from the Goon Squad. The America of 2037 is a country distracted by, infatuated with, and addicted to Arcadia. The brainchild of reclusive genius Juan Diego Reyes, Arcadia is a wickedly immersive, all-encompassing social-media platform and virtual-reality interface. Although Arcadia has made the Reyes family fabulously wealthy, it's left them--and the rest of the country--impoverished of that rare currency: intimacy. When Juan Diego mysteriously vanishes, the consequences shatter the lives of the entire Reyes clan. As matriarch Autumn struggles to hold the family together, siblings Gideon, Holly, and Devon wrestle with questions of purpose and meaning--seeking self-worth in a world where everything has been cheapened. Outside the artificial safety of Arcadia, America has crumbled into an unrecognizable nation where a fundamentalist ex-preacher occupies the Oval Office, megacorporations blithely exploit their full citizenship, and a twenty-foot-high Great Wall of Freedom plastered with lucrative advertising bestrides the US-Mexican border. In a polarized society now cripplingly hooked on manufactured highs, the Reyes family must overcome the seduction of simulation to find the kind of authentic human connection that offers salvation for all.
