Four young people must master their powers in order to escape from a barren, dangerous land in these three novels by a Newbery Medal winner. The Justice Trilogy includes: Justice and Her Brothers: For Justice and her identical twin brothers Levi and Thomas, the summer begins like any other. But as the slow days pass, Justice begins to notice a strange energy between her brothers, beyond their normal twin connection. Thomas becomes increasingly bossy and irritable, while Levi seems weak and absentminded. And there are changes happening within Justice, as well. Soon she discovers that she possesses a mysterious, extraordinary ability—and she and her brothers must uncover the secrets behind their newfound powers. Dustland: Using their psychic abilities, four children have formed a unit: Justice, the Watcher; Dorian, the healer; Thomas, the magician; and Levi, the sufferer. Together, they mind-travel to a strange future world called Dustland. And together they can survive anything. But when tensions run high between Thomas and Justice, will Thomas leave them stranded in this desolate land? With the future of their unit uncertain, the children are threatened by an even greater danger: Mal, the evil entity that controls Dustland. The Gathering: Justice, Dorian, Thomas, and Levi have unfinished business in the future. Joining together once again and time-traveling to Dustland, they hope to guide the inhabitants out of the dangerous, barren place in the hopes of finding a safer home. But neither they nor the residents of Dustland are truly safe as long as the sinister Mal remains in power. This volume includes all three of these stories filled with fantasy and adventure, by an author who has won many awards, including the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award, the Hans Christian Andersen Award, and the Coretta Scott King Award, as well as the National Book Award for her novel M.C. America in 1982: Japanese car companies are on the rise and believed to be putting U.S. autoworkers out of their jobs. Anti–Asian American sentiment simmers, especially in Detroit. A bar fight turns fatal, leaving a Chinese American man, Vincent Chin, beaten to death at the hands of two white men, autoworker Ronald Ebens and his stepson, Michael Nitz. Paula Yoo has crafted a searing examination of the killing and the trial and verdicts that followed. When Ebens and Nitz pled guilty to manslaughter and received only a $3,000 fine and three years’ probation, the lenient sentence sparked outrage. The protests that followed led to a federal civil rights trial—the first involving a crime against an Asian American—and galvanized what came to be known as the Asian American movement. Extensively researched from court transcripts, contemporary news accounts, and in-person interviews with key participants, From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry is a suspenseful, nuanced, and authoritative portrait of a pivotal moment in civil rights history, and a man who became a symbol against hatred and racism.

Book Description
Many Christian feminists wonder if they can simultaneously maintain their commitment to principles of gender equality and their faith in the Scriptures, particularly the Old Testament. Writing in response to feminist biblical scholars who approach the Old Testament with a hermeneutic of suspicion, Jacqueline Lapsley offers Christian feminists strategies to hear the subtle ideas and voices of the less powerful within the Old Testament texts. Reading and interpreting a number of Old Testament narratives in which women are prominent, Lapsley considers how these stories may reflect God's word for us. In doing so, she demonstrates how the narrative often attempts to shape the moral response of the reader by revealing the intricacy and complexity of the moral world evoked. In this gentle shaping of the reader's ethical sensibilities, she argues, is where God may be whispering a word for us.

Book Description
The law says be honest, truthful and faithful and treat everyone equally. But what does the law say when professional people start taking the laws into their own hands and playing with the justice system to use and abuse it with lies? When they deny the truth, lie and add false information to statements in order to ruin a person s reputation what does the law say then? Is there any justice? I was a victim of this. My only crime was my honesty. My son was a victim of bullying at school and no one considered the impact this had on him. Everything was denied and lies were added to the minutes of the meeting I attended. In a monstrous cover-up, all departments sided together. Meetings were scheduled by these departments and falsehoods drawn up against me. I was framed to look culpable. This is the true account of how my son and I experienced bullying at school and of the subsequent consequences. Islamic Law covers the giving of false testimonies, or bearing false witness. The messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you of the greatest of sins bearing false witness. The bearer of false witness commits several sins. They are as follows: a) The spreading of lies. Truly, God does not guide one who commits great sins one who is an oppressor, a transgressor, or a liar. b) A miscarriage of justice is committed against any person who has to bear false testimony, because its result means that the person is either deprived of property, honour, or his life. c) Conversely, it is unjust to the person favoured by false testimony because it allows them to acquire property unlawfully, thereby rendering them a sinner. d) The person delivering these untruths is unjust to himself by being the one to bear false witness. Lying represents an evil tongue. Indeed those who fabricate lies upon God are those who disbelieve in His teachings and His signs. It is they who are truly liars. The messenger of God said truth guides to righteousness, and righteousness leads to heaven. A person will evolve within truth until written with God as truthful. Lying leads to immorality which in turn leads to hell. A person will lie until written with God as a liar. A hypocrite (described to us by the Prophet) is one that lies as he speaks. An honest person has an answer to each lie levelled against them. And they will also admit to the honesty of a mistake. An honest person does not need to supply proof of their truthfulness it shows on their face. It is liars that look for proof to make their words appear true.

Book Description
Drawing on a variety of materials, including newspapers, legal briefs, political speeches, the art and literature of the time, and letters from thousands of ordinary Americans, Dauber shows that while this long history of government disaster relief has faded from our memory today, it was extremely well known to advocates for an expanded role for the national government in the 1930s, including the Social Security Act. Making this connection required framing the Great Depression as a disaster afflicting citizens though no fault of their own. Dauber argues that the disaster paradigm, though successful in defending the New Deal, would ultimately come back to haunt advocates for social welfare. By not making a more radical case for relief, proponents of the New Deal helped create the weak, uniquely American welfare state we have today - one torn between the desire to come to the aid of those suffering and the deeply rooted suspicion that those in need are responsible for their own deprivation.
