Book Description
This resonant and award-winning picture book tells the story of one girl who constantly gets asked a simple question that doesn’t have a simple answer. A great conversation starter in the home or classroom—a book to share, in the spirit of I Am Enough by Grace Byers and Keturah A. Bobo. When a girl is asked where she’s from—where she’s really from—none of her answers seems to be the right one. Unsure about how to reply, she turns to her loving abuelo for help. He doesn’t give her the response she expects. She gets an even better one. Where am I from? You’re from hurricanes and dark storms, and a tiny singing frog that calls the island people home when the sun goes to sleep.... With themes of self-acceptance, identity, and home, this powerful, lyrical picture book will resonate with readers young and old, from all backgrounds and of all colors—especially anyone who ever felt that they don’t belong. 2019 Nerdies Fiction Picture Book Award Winner | Silver Medalist for Bank Street College of Education’s Best Spanish Language Picture Books of the Year | Named one of Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2019 |A Mighty Girl’s 2019 Book of the Year | Named one of New York Public Library's Best Books for Kids 2019 "Lyrical language and luminous illustrations. An ideal vehicle for readers to ponder and discuss their own identities." —Kirkus (starred review) "An enchanted, hand-in-hand odyssey [and] opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the many, many backgrounds, roots, histories, of those who live in these United States." —Shelf Awareness (starred review) "A much-needed title that is a first purchase for libraries and classrooms." —School Library Journal "This touching book addresses a ubiquitous question for children of color, and in the end, the closeness between the girl and Abuelo shows that no matter the questions, she knows exactly where she’s from." —Booklist "Although the book begins as a gentle riposte to narrow cultural and ethnic categorizations, its conclusion reaches out to all readers, evoking both heritage and the human family." —Publishers Weekly A Spanish-language edition, ¿De dónde eres?, is also available.

Where Are They Going?
Author: Stan Dotson
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666766852
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 137
Book Description
Where They Are Going narrates the comings and goings of five Cubans who represent some of the great cultural diversity making up cubanía (the essence of being Cuban), with ancestral ties to five different parts of the world. It is an alternative account to the stereotypical storyline about Cuba we often hear in the US media, that of refugees fleeing a dictatorship in search of a promised land. The largely untold story is that of people who find promise in their own patria, their homeland, despite the challenging circumstances they find there. Here you will find five Cubans who do not appear to feel “trapped” in tyranny; each of them has traveled the world and each made the decision to go back to their Cuban homes. The book not only tells their stories, but also narrates the imagined backstories of those ancestors who left their own homelands to come and contribute to the rich culture and resilient spirit that defines what it means to be Cuban. Listen to their stories and you might find yourself pulled away from your own patria, attracted to a land and a life that could prove to be well worth whatever challenges it poses.

God, Where Are You?
Author: Carlos Mesters
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1592444261
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
"God, where are you?" is a question many of us ask, at many points in life - usually when we don't know what path to take, or where to turn in despair. In God, Where Are You? Carlos Mesters suggests that to answer this question we should turn to the place turned to again and again throughout history; the Bible itself. God, Where Are You? provides a way to approach the Bible as millions of ordinary people have, for many hundreds of years. Carlos Mesters suggests that the Bible can be considered the Christian family album, and its contents a guide for discovering who we are, where we came from, and - of course - where God is in our lives. Scholars may study and debate, argue and date, searching for the perfect answers to who wrote down which part of the Bible and when, but this is not the total of what the Bible is. God, Where Are You? shows that it is the people of the Bible, and the stories of how God touches them, that have the most to tell us. Mesters looks at the stories of Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses and the prophets, as well as the story of Job and the Psalms of David from the Hebrew Scriptures. Then, he turns to the Gospels, the Sermon on the Mount, the Parables, Miracles, and Life of Jesus. Throughout, he shows how the Bible, in speaking about people, also speaks about God being always, firmly, in their midst.

Where Are You From?
Author: Barbara J. Fahrnbauber
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1481736043
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 665
Book Description
Albert Fahrnbauer vowed on his mothers deathbed that he would dedicate his life to the service of mankind, and chose Art, through portraiture. He set out to develop a new scientific system that inspired people through color matched to each personality a portrait that revealed a blueprint toward a radiant better life. Alberts vision is the center of his life. But he needs help. He marries with the understanding his wife Barbara will join him in developing his Science-Art. They will have no children. He wants her to join him every step of the way painting only with his system. She must abandon her free-spirited, messy way of painting. This is the story of where each of them came from, their different personalities and how their backgrounds inspired, damaged, and diverged throughout their lives together. Volume 1 Inspired by Albert, Barbara marries him without really understanding what he wants of her. It is 1952. They live in the east side tenement district in New York City, like walking backwards through time. There are no refrigerators. Blocks of ice, swung onto a mans back with a huge hook are delivered up three flights of stairs to an icebox for 25 cents. Volume 2 is the journey to Atlanta, Georgia, and buying a home-studio. Albert inherits $10,000 and buys a dairy farm. Volume 3 opens with joyous hope for life on their farm. They are burdened by debt and the failure of the dairy. They hoped their farm would be their Garden of Eden. So begins Alberts remorse over abandoning his vow to create a new system of art. Everything they try shrivels to dust. Even the maids they hire during the Christmas rush for portraits seem to have a lot to teach them, Barbara especially.

Where Are You Mom?
Author: Anne-Marie Mac Donald Courtemanche
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1525568167
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 234
Book Description
When Anne-Marie Courtemanche was a little girl, she fell victim to a sadistic step-father, who physically and sexually abused her and her little sister and savagely beat their emotionally-withdrawn mother and siblings. Then her mother fled the marriage, taking some of the children...but leaving Anne-Marie behind to be tormented and abused for the rest of her childhood. Where Are You, Mom? is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit, the effect that even a little bit of love can have on a damaged soul, and the power of sibling bonds. A shocking indictment of the failures of organized religion and social services in protecting abused children during the 1960s and ’70s, it chronicles Anne-Marie’s determined quest for justice in the crimes against her. As Anne-Marie rises to healing, a beacon of hope shines through. Heart-stoppingly frank and painfully emotional, this is an autobiography that will inspire other victims to seize back control of lives tainted or ruined...while deeply haunting those lucky enough to be untouched by abuse.

Where Are You Lord?
Author: Ginger Grancagnolo Ed.D.,D. Min.
Publisher: Balboa Press
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
Some days can seem just ordinary. We awaken at a designated time with a head full of tasks, have-to and what ifs. We might check our phones and devices, getting info for the day that ranges from the weather, stocks, politics, and messages to “Alexa, turn on the coffee pot.” Somehow, this probable routine has become normal. Somehow, this may be how we prepare for an ordinary day with the intent that we might be ready and safe to greet the day with some level of pleasure and success. All this actually sounds reasonable. However, it only takes one traffic jam one late bus, one unexpected phone call, one breaking news alert, and this seemingly reliable system can easily crumble into dust carrying all positive goals and expectations with it. We would falter into distractions, upsets, frustrations and fatigue before noon, because of “something” or “someone” that knocks us off our purposed day and all without warning. Uncertainty bubbles up everywhere. Local and global news are filled with violence and upheaval on a regular basis. We are bombarded by the media on all our tech devices, and we now are even further conflicted with what has been phrased “Fake news.” We have access 24/7 to split-second, ongoing information, yet we don’t really know what is valid and what isn’t. We may feel the media, government, philosophies, dreams, goals and faith have all failed us. Whom or what can we trust? We do our best to analyze, understand the rapid pace of present lives, and somewhere deep inside we perhaps all want similar goals. We desire peace, prosperity, healthy bodies and relationships, and the opportunity to make some dreams come true personally and professionally. It all sounds reasonable. However, the biggest challenge may be how to bridge what we desire from inside our hearts with a world outside that feels often unsafe, biased and unfair. If we have ever tried to make clear sense of our lives, we probably have said, or even shouted, “Where are you, Lord?” Regardless of the mood we were in, asking or praying this plea may have mostly resulted in more quiet tears and confusion. I say this from my own experience. In fact, this missive is the result of my own confusion, pain and earnest desire to know the truth of God on a daily basis. I used one guiding Light based on one single truth: “Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) I wanted to know and feel a reliable relationship with God that was not slanted by my ego needs or imagination. I wanted to trust His truth, and then be guided to live with a practical spirituality that was rooted in joy, love, peace and wisdom that could serve everyone. This book is my personal encounter. It is not meant to be blindly accepted or rejected only shared. Each reader is encouraged to find his/her own way, so to speak. These pages are meant to provide a practical way to hear the inner Voice that is within all of us and to learn how to trust it and follow it. This inner Voice is always a gentle whisper of love and peace. It is steady and unwavering. It is reliable. It is permanent.

As these young women's poignant and unexpected journeys unfold, and eventually meet, Where Are You, Echo Blue? interrogates celebrity culture, the thin line between admiration and obsession, and what it means to tell other peoples’ stories, all while ushering us on an unruly ride to find out what did become of Echo Blue.
