Book Description
A searing novella about coming of age in a land of tyranny, by one of Germany's most brilliant young authors. In The Book of Words, Jenny Erpenbeck captures with amazing virtuosity the inner life of a young girl who survives the totalitarian regime of a curiously unnamed South American country (most likely Argentina during its "dirty war"). Raised by parents whose real identity ends up shocking her, the girl comes of age in a country where gunshots are mistaken for blown tires, innocent citizens are dragged off buses, and tortured and disappeared friends and family return to visit her from the dead.

Book Description
Seth Madrigal, humble househusband and homeschooling father, didn’t burn down the house. Let’s just all keep that in mind. All he’d intended to do was rekindle his kids' love for learning by wrapping their day in a fantasy live action roleplay system he created: Dadquest. It involved adventure, intrigue, loot—with a little homework thrown in to keep things educational. Sure, he may have unknowingly brought home a cursed book that summoned evil minions to kill his family. There’s no point denying that part. If it weren’t for the shattered toilet in the upstairs bathroom or the scorch marks on the backyard lawn (remember: the house did not burn down!), Seth might have been able to chalk the whole thing up to a caffeine-fueled hallucination. Or perhaps a nervous breakdown. Maybe a mid-life crisis. Goddess knows he was ripe for all three. Look, of course it sounds impossible and ridiculous. But every word of it is true. And if his beloved wife accepted his five thousand apologies—including his explanation about how his mother-in-law’s lipstick got all over his face—then you should, too. Let’s focus on the fact that the house is officially not burned down. Seth kept his word. To his wife. He deserves a raise. (but will also accept a chest of legendary loot as compensation. Huzzah!) This fantasy-fueled fiasco was written by Tom Sadira for his upcoming short story anthology A Few Before We're Through, which is available now for pre-order.

Book Description
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With midterms looming, the students at Sunnydale High are predictably stressed-out. Even super-student Willow is feeling the pressure to succeed. And when her usual study buddies -- Buffy, Xander, and Oz -- decide they don't need her tutorial sessions, Willow wonders if she's really what they don't need. But her hurt feelings don't explain her sudden antagonism toward Buffy -- or the strange dreams they've both been having. As tensions in the school escalate into brutal acts of violence -- and the perpetrators turn up horribly mutilated -- Buffy and the gang search for a supernatural source. The evidence indicates that someone is attempting to resurrect a powerful Hindu demon. Willow's new confidante, guidance counselor Promila Daruwalla, becomes the prime suspect...until Giles runs into an old "friend" who is always causing trouble. It will take all of the Slayer's resources...and the help of all her friends...to find the culprit and destroy the key to the demon's resurrection.

The Security of Infants
Author: Betty M. Flint
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487597118
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
This book contains a great deal of information about the personality of young babies. But its greatest fascination lies not in the information it is able to supply but in the many unanswered questions it raises. The author is convinced that each baby manifests his particular personality qualities very early in life, and the way that these are received by the environment into which he has been thrust will largely determine how he will stand up to the stresses of his future life. The development of a mental health assessment form as a yardstick by which a large variety of babies can be evaluated should help unfold some of the teasing obscurities of personality as they are revealed in infancy. If personality is a constant from early life to adulthood, such an instrument, revealing basic qualities in infancy, should lead therefore to greater understanding through school age and to adulthood and help reveal the effect of environmental experiences on a growing child. The thesis of the book is that mental health in infancy is derived from a close dependent relationship with a mother-figure who gives a child an opportunity to form a dependent trust in her care and affection. From this relationship is derived the desire to become effortful, outgoing and independent in one's world, which leads eventually to trust in oneself as a person of uniqueness and worth. The book should have greatest appeal to child care workers, psychiatrists and pediatricians. Research centres for child development should be interested in the experimental aspect of the work.

Just because a bullet has your name on it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t duck… Either I’m stubborn, or it’s rigor mortis, but being dead didn’t stop me from being a detective or finding my wife’s killer. But it’s tough out there for a zombie, and lately it’s been getting tougher. These days the life-challenged have to register and take monthly tests to prove our emotional stability. See, if my kind gets too low, we go feral. I’ve been feeling a little down lately myself… So when a severed arm—yeah, just the arm—leaves a mysterious briefcase at my office, my assistant, Misty, thinks figuring out where it came from will keep me on track. But this case goes deeper and darker than I imagined, and my imagination gets pretty dark. Turns out the people after it know more about my past life than I can remember, and even more about what I’ve become.
