The Politics of Trade Pressure
Author: Mohammed Ishaq
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 042980816X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 328
Book Description
First published in 1999, this volume examines Soviet-American relations with a specific emphasis on the American use of trade pressure in comparison with Soviet involvement in regional conflicts, in contrast to a broader East-West dichotomous analysis. Mohammed Ishaq addresses the history of the political and economic partnership, followed by the questions of non-strategic trade, strategic trade, Soviet policy on human rights and Soviet involvement in the Third World and regional conflicts. In doing so, Ishaq recognises the use of trade pressure as economic statecraft in foreign policy in a reassessment of its effectiveness.

American-Soviet Trade in the Cold War
Author: Philip J. Funigiello
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
This study brings a valuable perspective to the important issue of Cold War politics on American Soviet trade policy over the past forty years. Generally, American presidents from Truman through Reagan have been more sophisticated than Congress or the public in their approach to trade policies with the USSR and the Communist bloc. The author is particularly critical of Congress, where anti-Communist sentiment resulted in restrictive trade measures that limited the Executive's flexibility in economic policy. Originally published in 1988. A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. These editions are published unaltered from the original, and are presented in affordable paperback formats, bringing readers both historical and cultural value.

Contrasting US and German Attitudes to Soviet Trade, 1917-91
Author: Hélène Seppain
Publisher: MacMillan
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
This book provides an historical perspective to the current debate in the West over the role of economic assistance to the former Soviet Union. The debate is rooted in the important differences in the approach to Soviet trade between the USA and Germany since 1917. The two approaches are illustrated by an analysis of the use of trade as a political instrument. This analysis offers a new perspective on the role of the US-led Western embargo against the Soviet bloc in deepening the division of Germany in 1947-52. It explains why during the 1960s West Germany adopted a conciliatory reappraisal of trade policy towards the Soviet bloc and how this affects the present German approach to economic relations with the former Soviet Union. Helene Seppain shows how, by quite different policies, the USA and Germany can both ultimately claim success in achieving their East-West foreign policy objectives: in the US case, the defeat of the Soviet system; in the German case, Soviet agreement in 1990 to a united Germany within NATO.
