Book Description
Excerpt from Wayside Pansies Flora's Favors. Oct 17, 1888 I would that I ruled Flora, queen of flowers, To bid her lay her kingdom at thy feet, To bring thee bliss, to give thee gladness sweet, To lead thy way through beauty-laden bowers. Not only pansies then would bright thy hours, But violets, too, from many a fair retreat Where modesty and thought in concord meet, To rain their sentiments in gentle showers. The lilies pure would ever seek thy face To gain thy beauty's favor, and to prove Their lives and thine a wondrous garden plot Of living joy, the halo of thy grace. Id crown thee last with roses, rich in love, hen humbly pray to thee: "Forget-me-not." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Wayside Flowers It is ever a pleasure to introduce our friends. We want the world to know them and to share with us the delight of acquaintance and communion. This is something more than a selfish joy; it is altruistic. What enriches us will add to the wealth of others. It is not in any sense a formal duty that devolves upon me. It is with a rare sense of inner satisfaction that I respond to the request to write an introductory paragraph or two for "Wayside Flowers." The writer is pleased to count the author among the friends who have a place in the holy of holies of his life. Our lives have run for a time, side by side, like streams that seek the same great sea. In the Church we love, in the Epworth League, to which we have been alike devoted, in social work for God and humanity, it has been my privilege to feel the pulse-beat of this young life. That you may know my friend in some measure, I would introduce to you "Wayside Flowers." These poems exhale a fragrance that will exert an influence to sanctify every-day life. Book Description
Excerpt from Wayside Flowers: Poems A Prayer. When I shall fall asleep, life's struggle o'er, Asleep to 'waken upon earth no more, Then let forgotten be all earthly woes And let me glide into a sweet repose To wake with Thee! In that last hour may peace my couch about Its radiance shed, dispelling every doubt, And grant that then the hearts of those I love, The shades of death be lifted far above By conquering faith! As the deep sunset glow, which, melting into night, Gives promise of a coming morning bright, So let to them, I pray, my parting be; Though dark the hour, may through the gloom they see The coming dawn! Book Description
Excerpt from Wayside Flower: And Other Poems Happiness is a. Wayside flower, growing on the high road to usefulness. N eeling there in silent anguish, all her frame convulsed with grief, Gaze we with a tender pity, where we can not bring relief. Scarcely turned of fourteen summers - less of woman than of child Old in sorrow she must needs be, to have learned a look so wild. Not in youth can one great trouble sadden thus the mobile face, Many and persistent trials there have been to leave such trace. O, God! She cries, In mercy hear me! Why should life be dark like this, When my own heart tells me daily that the world is full of bliss! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Wayside Flowers: A Collection of Poems Since that most eventful period in the life of every wo man, marriage, among many vicissitudes and domestic cares, Mrs. Loud has still cherished her early fondnesses and predilections, and plucked many way-side flowers from the pleasant paths of poetry. These she has gath ered together, and they are now presented, by the hand to which they were modestly committed for selection and arrangement, without alteration, and with few omissions. Those omissions were the most difficult part of the proof-reader's (for he cannot conscientiously say editor's) task; for where no exception could be taken to any piece, it was hard to decide upon any to except. But it is very important that a volume of poems should not be too large; since the smallness of the package, to use a mercantile metaphor, often suggests the value of the goods. Mrs. Loud has resided, during many of the maturer years of her life, at the South; and hence it is that no small portion of her descriptive poetry is imbued with the warmth and sweetness of a tropical climate. Her present residence is in Philadelphia. The writer does not put his initials to this imperfect introduction with any idea that they will give vogue to productions sufficiently recommended by their intrinsic merit, but simply to show that the opinions expressed are those of a responsible, if not competent critic. Book Description
Excerpt from A Bunch of Pansies WE should constantly remember, in perusing the following simple poems, that their authoress is blind. Not one who has once seen, and in her childish years looked on the forms of nature, which she loves, kindled to brightness, and outlined by living light and bathed in beauteous colors, and so enriched her fancy by the images of vision. She has never seen. To one born blind, the ear and fingers perform the office of the eye. Of a world of ideas, another's narra tive, another's description, is the sole substitute for her own obser vation and experience. Judge what conception can be formed of colors by one who lacks the sense to which alone color is addressed.
