Book Description
Watson and Alice- Prolific Swashbucklers (Holiday Edition) is the third volume to the book series, wherein our heroes, accompanied by our new dynamic duo of Park Shi Hyung and Jin Seok Woo, go on some more adventures during their summer break. In the sixth episode, we see Watson and his friends head towards the Irish farmhouse in the countryside, run by Alice’s uncle. We also see two characters from the first volume make a comeback in this episode. But only a few hundred metres away from their holiday location is the Darean Town infested by intimidating hoodlums that led the town to be almost derelict. We meet a resident of that town, Darcy Cooper, who helps them fight against the bandits in order to save the Mayor’s daughter, Virginia. Do they succeed? Or does the reign of the hoodlums continue to flourish in the town? In the seventh episode, the timeline of an alternate medieval France somehow merges with the timeline of our protagonists, and we get princess Margaret who accidentally appears inside their refrigerator. She mentions about their ongoing battle with Britain and returns back to her realm. This drives our group to travel back in time to help her, but when they reach there, they encounter a completely different problem. They get the position of musketeers and after succeeding in their first mission, they meet the shady Cortez, chief advisor to the King of France, Calvin III, brother of Margaret. Does he really turn out to be the villain of the story, or an innocent courtier? The eighth episode encounters Park’s accidental teleportation to ancient Egypt after she finds a ring in a mound of sand. This leads the rest of our group to travel to the same place to find her, which they succeed in as soon as they arrive at the blazing desert of Egypt. They finally meet a native, Akhegonath, who takes them to the capital city, Cairo, King Turenkhagegn's kingdom. But soon they meet with a trap. How do they escape it? Finally they reach the mythical kingdom of Osiris and a new tumult awaits them, which is instigated by Park's sudden trip to the Afterlife. What caused her to get there? Will our heroes succeed in bringing her back?

David Susskind
Author: Stephen Battaglio
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
ISBN: 1429946148
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 401
Book Description
A rich biography of one of the most important cultural figures of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s—maverick television producer and talk show host David Susskind A flamboyant impresario who began his career as an agent, David Susskind helped define a fledgling television industry. He was a provocateur who fought to bring high-toned literary works to TV. His series East Side/West Side and N.Y.P.D. broke the color barrier in casting and brought gritty, urban realism to prime time. He indulged his passion for issues and ideas with his long running discussion program, first called Open End and then The David Susskind Show, where guests could come from The White House one week and a whore house the next. The groundbreaking program made news year in and year out. His legendary live interview with Nikita Khrushchev at the height of the Cold War inflamed both the political and media establishments. Susskind was an enfant terrible whose life—both on and off the screen—makes fascinating reading. His rough edges, appetite for women, and scorn for the business side of his profession often left his own career hanging by a thread. Through extensive original reporting and deep access to David Susskind's personal papers, family members and former associates, Stephen Battaglio creates a vivid portrait of a go-go era in American media. David Susskind is as much a biography of an expansive and glamorous time in the television business as it is the life of one of its most colorful and important players.

Ordinary Dogs
Author: Eileen Battersby
Publisher: Faber & Faber
ISBN: 0571277853
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 364
Book Description
Eileen Battersby is the chief literature critic of The Irish Times and is, in the words of John Banville, 'the finest fiction critic we have'. But her first full-length book is not about international literature or the state of the novel. It is about dogs. Two dogs in particular, with the unlikely names of Bilbo and Frodo. She adopted the first from a horrible dog pound, and the second decided he liked her and moved in to join the family. She was in her very early twenties, an intensely serious student and runner who had just moved to Ireland from California. The dogs became her most loyal companions for over twenty years, witnesses to an often difficult human life and more important to her than most other humans. This book is about two animals with personalities, emotions and prejudices. It is unlike any other book ever written about dogs. It is not sentimental or twee. Battersby became intimately involved in the lives of these intelligent, shrewd creatures, and brings them to life with rare passion and insight. She writes honestly and movingly about the reasons why, for certain people - especially women - there is more integrity in the mysterious relationship with a mammal who cannot speak than there is in most of the relationships that human society has to offer.

The Adventure of Relevance
Author: Martin Savransky
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137571462
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
At a time where the relevance of the social sciences is under threat, this innovative book offers a speculative experimentation on the philosophy and methodology of the social sciences to rethink what 'relevance' is, and to cultivate a new ethos of knowledge-making for an eventful world. Engaging a diverse a range of thinkers including Alfred North Whitehead, Gilles Deleuze and Isabelle Stengers, as well as the American pragmatists John Dewey and William James, Martin Savransky challenges longstanding assumptions in the social sciences and argues that relevance is an event that is part and parcel of the immanent and situated processes by which things come to matter. He develops new conceptual tools for cultivating an empiricist ethos of inquiry that is attuned to the question of how things come to matter– an ethics that turns social inquiry into a veritable adventure. The result is an original and rigorous book that infuses knowledge-practices in the social sciences with new sensibilities, creative possibilities, and novel habits of thinking, knowing, and feeling.

King Leopold's Ghost
Author: Adam Hochschild
Publisher: Picador
ISBN: 1760785202
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 474
Book Description
With an introduction by award-winning novelist Barbara Kingsolver In the late nineteenth century, when the great powers in Europe were tearing Africa apart and seizing ownership of land for themselves, King Leopold of Belgium took hold of the vast and mostly unexplored territory surrounding the Congo River. In his devastatingly barbarous colonization of this area, Leopold stole its rubber and ivory, pummelled its people and set up a ruthless regime that would reduce the population by half. . While he did all this, he carefully constructed an image of himself as a deeply feeling humanitarian. Winner of the Duff Cooper Prize in 1999, King Leopold’s Ghost is the true and haunting account of this man’s brutal regime and its lasting effect on a ruined nation. It is also the inspiring and deeply moving account of a handful of missionaries and other idealists who travelled to Africa and unwittingly found themselves in the middle of a gruesome holocaust. Instead of turning away, these brave few chose to stand up against Leopold. Adam Hochschild brings life to this largely untold story and, crucially, casts blame on those responsible for this atrocity.

Publisher: UCL Press
ISBN: 1787352943
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 179
Book Description
From its foundation in 1826, UCL embraced a progressive and pioneering spirit. It was the first university in England to admit students regardless of religion and made higher education affordable and accessible to a much broader section of society. This book charts the history of UCL from 1826 through to the present day, highlighting its many contributions to society in Britain and around the world. It covers the expansion of the university through the growth in student numbers and institutional mergers. It documents shifts in governance throughout the years and the changing social and economic context in which UCL operated, including challenging periods of reconstruction after two World Wars. Today UCL is one of the powerhouses of research and teaching, and a truly global university. It is currently seventh in the QS World University Rankings. This completely revised and updated edition features a new chapter based on interviews with key individuals at UCL. It comes at a time of ambitious development for UCL with the establishment of an entirely new campus in East London, UCL East, and Provost Michael Arthur’s ‘UCL 2034’ strategy which aims to secure the university’s long-term future and commits UCL to delivering global impact.
