Book Description
The rat twitched violently before collapsing. Its breathing stopped completely. Yes, Bruce thought, it is dead once again. He shook his head in both fear and disgust. Now the first rat was in the corner gnawing away at the newest piece of meat it had acquired, but Bruce continued to pay attention to the dead rat.He stood by the main cage with his hand over his mouth. It was the cage holding the first two rats that were injected with the new, tweaked substance. After less than thirty seconds the "dead" rat's rear leg began twitching incessantly, and soon it lifted its head and glared at its opponent, its milky white eyes reflecting Satan himself. It got on all fours, drew back, and flew at its cage-mate with a ferocity that Bruce had never seen. The tables had violently turned.

Book Description
Itês been a year since the body of seventeen-year-old Kelsey Little was found in the river outside Dark Vespers, Nebraska. Although the town may have reached an uneasy equilibrium, those who loved her most have certainly not: Javier Martinez, her troubled ex-boyfriend and the father of the child no one knew she was carrying; Sam and Hank, her parents, whose marriage is coming apart under the pressure of grief and not-knowing; and Ike Parrish, a reclusive eccentric whose clairvoyant –river spells” compel him to come forward with information about Kelseyês disappearance and death. A prismatic look at the impact of loss on individual lives, Water and Abandon tells the moving and paradoxical story of those brought together by the very thing that tears them apart. Haunted by Kelseyês death, each struggles with his or her own demons of blame and guilt, despair and furyãuntil one, in a confusion of pain, grief, and unrequited love, decides to do something dire. As deeply felt as it is finely crafted, the novel confirms Robert Vivianês place among the most interesting fiction writers of our day.

Book Description
Farmland abandonment is one of the major land use changes occurring in many rural territories, especially in mountainous regions. Without intervention (passive land management), farmland abandonment leads to an expansion of shrubs and forest on formerly cultivated hillslopes and grazing areas. All these land use changes affect the hydrological and geomorphological dynamics of slopes and channels, having important implications for water resources and soil conservation. However, the heterogeneity of abandoned scenarios complicates the assessment of farmland abandonment on water resources and soil conservation. In this Special Issue, we will publish papers that examine the hydrological and geomorphological consequences of farmland abandonment in one (or several) of these abandoned scenarios. Our final purpose is to help water and land managers to select the most sustainable strategy (in terms of water resources and soil conservation) for the land management of marginal rural areas.

Book Description
A beautiful, lyrical exploration of the places where nature is flourishing in our absence "[Flyn] captures the dread, sadness, and wonder of beholding the results of humanity's destructive impulse, and she arrives at a new appreciation of life, 'all the stranger and more valuable for its resilence.'" --The New Yorker Some of the only truly feral cattle in the world wander a long-abandoned island off the northernmost tip of Scotland. A variety of wildlife not seen in many lifetimes has rebounded on the irradiated grounds of Chernobyl. A lush forest supports thousands of species that are extinct or endangered everywhere else on earth in the Korean peninsula's narrow DMZ. Cal Flyn, an investigative journalist, exceptional nature writer, and promising new literary voice visits the eeriest and most desolate places on Earth that due to war, disaster, disease, or economic decay, have been abandoned by humans. What she finds every time is an "island" of teeming new life: nature has rushed in to fill the void faster and more thoroughly than even the most hopeful projections of scientists. Islands of Abandonment is a tour through these new ecosystems, in all their glory, as sites of unexpected environmental significance, where the natural world has reasserted its wild power and promise. And while it doesn't let us off the hook for addressing environmental degradation and climate change, it is a case that hope is far from lost, and it is ultimately a story of redemption: the most polluted spots on Earth can be rehabilitated through ecological processes and, in fact, they already are.

Book Description
A century-old mystery - and a desperate battle to survive. Abandon is a compulsive standalone thriller from Blake Crouch, the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion. On Christmas Day in 1893, every inhabitant in a remote mining town disappears: belongings forsaken, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins and not a single bone found. More than a century later, journalist Abigail Foster and her historian father have set out to explore the long-abandoned town and learn what happened there. With them are two backcountry guides, a psychic and a paranormal photographer, who are there to investigate rumours that the town is haunted. But Abigail and her companions are about to learn that the town's ghosts are the least of their worries. Twenty miles from civilization, with a blizzard bearing down, they realize they are not alone. The ordeal that follows will test this small team past the breaking point as they battle the elements and human foes alike, and discover that the town's secrets still have the power to kill . . . Part journey into old-West history, part nail-biting survival thriller, Abandon is a bloody, darkly surprising tale as only Blake Crouch could deliver.
