Raccoons
Author: Samuel I. Zeveloff
Publisher: Smithsonian Institution
ISBN: 1588343839
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
The word raccoon is drawn from the Native American Algonquian language. Their term arakun roughly translates to “he who scratches with his hands.” Anyone who has found a raccoon rummaging around in a once securely closed trash container can attest to how skillful raccoons are with their front paws. In fact, they have four times as many sensory receptors in their forepaw skin as they do in their hindpaws, a ratio similar to that of human hands and feet. Samuel Zeveloff explores this trait and much more in his accessible natural history of raccoons. Written with the general reader in mind, Raccoons presents detailed information on raccoon evolution, physical characteristics, social behavior, habitats, food habits, reproduction, and conservation, as well as their relationship with humans and many other topics. The section on distribution and subspecies focuses on the raccoon’s current range expansion, and the material on their cultural significance demonstrates this mammal’s unique status in different North American cultures.

The Wolf, the Watcher, and the Oryx
Author: Joan Walsh
Publisher: XinXii
ISBN: 1329322037
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 294
Book Description
Khoa and his grandfather, Tristian are thought to be the last two descendants of an ancient pack of white wolves who followed ‘the way of the wolf.’ As the novel opens, Tristian lies dying, having been torn apart by the pack, for teaching Khoa ‘the way,’ which is now forbidden. The old wolf sends Khoa on a quest to find a watcher wolf, a book, and a society of white wolves; none of which may exist. As Khoa escapes through a mole tunnel that his grandfather had prepared for him, the pack waits outside the hut to ‘set upon him’. In this Revisionist pack wolves kill wolves. Khoa is a reluctant hero, but through his adventures he takes on more belief in the traditions his grandfather had opened him up to. Khoa goes over a waterfall, runs into vipers, and has other troubles, but finally makes it to the river where Tristian told him he would find the Watcher Wolf. It is here that his new family finds him. His adopted zoo is made up of Washer, the raccoon, Pieces, the old chewed rabbit, and Serious, the young, officious rabbit, to name a few who add a lighter side to Khoas quest. Khoa has a love interest in the story in the form of Ani, an artic white wolf. They grew up in the Revisionist Society together, but never knew they had feelings for each other. Ani sees Khoa escape, and hopes to have Staver, Dueces' son, rescue her instead of hounding Khoa's trail to give him a head start. She places her paw in the mouth of the red iron dog, a man trap, and puts a twig in it to prevent her from really getting hurt, but the steel trap snaps the twig and she is caught in it for real. Scout, her father, and the pack are on the trail of Khoa, but get her scent and follow it until they realize Khoa isn't with her. Through a twist in the tale, Scout talks his daughter into leaving the pack and setting out to look for Khoa, which she does with the help of Retread, who happens to be one of the alpha pack leader, Dueces’ son. They have turned against the pack. The Watcher Wolf finally meets up with Khoa and teaches him to ‘humble himself’ before he can read ‘the way of the wolf.’ The watcher and the other animals tell him the true story of the Last Revolt, how Duece came to be in possession of the oryx, and how it was that the black wolves killed Khoa’s mother and father. Duece believes the oryx is the magic that has protected the white wolves and seeks after it as well as Khoa. The young cub has learned through the Watcher that there are other white wolves and a twin cub, his brother, Tor, who did survive the Last Revolt. He meets up with his twin as Duece and the black wolves close in on him; gathering their great armies of the East, South, and West against the white wolves. Both armies come face to face on the mountain of fire and ice where the spirit of the Venger wolf is unleashed. Through the use of the oryx and the ways of the wolf, the two brothers triumph over the Venger spirit of the dark wolves and make it to the realm of the Wilds and their ancestral home.

PUSSY BLACK FACE - The Adventures of a Mischievous Kitten and his Friends
Author: Marshall Saunders
Publisher: Abela Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 8829526754
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
Pussy Black-Face, or, “The story of a kitten and her friends” is a book for boys and girls written by Marshall Saunders and illustrated by Diantha Horne Marlowe. Our story starts with Pussy Black Face introducing himself - “My name is Pussy Black-Face, and I am a naughty young kitten. I wish I were good like my mother. She is the best cat that I ever saw. I try to be like her, and sometimes I succeed, but most times I don't.” Known to all as Black Face, this cat is a mischievous kitten who does things most cats do, like sleep, eat and hog the warmth of the fire and sleep even more. Black Face and his friends are looked after by Mrs. Darley. She is a widow with two adopted children—Billy and Margaret. Black Face has a sister named Serena, and a brother called Jimmy Dory. But, Black Face is not the first cat which most people choose to stroke or pick up to cuddle. Neither is Black face the most agile cat. He is the most adventurous of the siblings, and is forever knocking over ornaments, and other precious nick-knacks, quite often breaking them. As the summer came on, Mrs Darley opened up the house and Black Face and his friends were allowed to explore the pavement while their mother and father sat on the wide window sill watching. “Beware of the naughty boys,” his mother warned. The kittens began to play with a pebble and chase it along the pavement. Before they realised it they had lost sight of the house and chased the pebble right into the hands of the very boys their mother had warned them about. And so began the adventures of Black Face and his friends…… But what happened next you ask? Well you will have to download and read this book to find out for yourselves! Raccoon
Author: Daniel Heath Justice
Publisher: Reaktion Books
ISBN: 1789144256
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
Masked bandits of the night, raiders of farm crops and rubbish bins, raccoons are notorious for their indifference to human property and propriety. Yet they are also admired for their intelligence, dexterity, and determination. Raccoons have thoroughly adapted to human-dominated environments—they are thriving in numbers greater than at any point of their evolutionary history, including in new habitats. Raccoon surveys the natural and cultural history of this opportunistic omnivore, tracing its biological evolution, social significance, and image in a range of media and political contexts. From intergalactic misanthropes and despoilers of ancient temples to coveted hunting quarry, unpredictable pet, and symbols of wilderness and racist stereotype alike, Raccoon offers a lively consideration of this misunderstood outlaw species.
