Book Description
Excerpt from Wanderings Before the War The material for this account was collected during the early months of 1908, and was arranged in the few spare moments of the next two and a half years. The book as it stands represents that material without any alteration or enlargement suggested by subsequent events; for example, in the chapters dealing with Serbia and the Provinces I was scrupulously careful to confine myself to the results of my own observation and to avoid any suggestion of the great change caused by the Annexation or of the increased harshness of the Austrian rule. The book was finished in June, 1911, but owing to the onset of a very long and severe illness, I took no steps toward? having it published for some considerable time. On reading it through after the lapse of four years, I find that any attempt at revision would need more time and labour than my health permits, and therefore mistakes remain which I would have wished to correct. For one of these I feel bound to apologise. Throughout I looked upon the Germans, as distinct from the Prussians, as a friendly nation. At the time of writing I believed that when the war came there would be no virulence on either side, except on the part of the Prussians. I am ashamed of the mistake, as I ought to have formed a better idea of the influence of Treitschke on all classes of the German Empire. Book Description
Excerpt from Wanderings of a War-Artist I believe that although a large section of the public do not read the prefaces to books, preferring to judge uh biased by the author's promises or apologies for them selves, there are, on the other hand, many who do, and to whom it is a sort of key-note to the contents; therefore should it incisively convey a suggestion of the menu with which their mental appetite is about to be appeased. Throughout these pages I have endeavoured, without egotism, to tell a plain, unvarnished tale of my wanderings. Commencing, then, with a first course, in which I touch on my early life and its subsequent vicissitudes, I go on to those campaigns that form the more substantial fare which follows, and which if found acceptable will, before. Book Description
Excerpt from Wanderings and Memories This book describes incidents of my own life and in the lives of others I have known; travels in search of big game and Natural History; letters of strange interest by all kinds of men living in many lands; sidelights on the Great War, in fact a conglomeration of anything in life that might prove of interest to men and women who move about and do things a little out of the ordinary ruck. They have been set down rather as the spirit moved me to write, and if somewhat disjointed, I trust they will appeal to other rovers like myself. If variety is the spice of life, perhaps even such tales as these may find their readers amongst those who have followed the open road. Book Description
Excerpt from More Wanderings in London IS book is a companion to A Wanderer in London, published in 1906, and supplements it. New editions, bringing that work to date, will, I hope, continue to appear. More Wanderings in London contains certain matter of interest omitted from the earlier book, such as descriptions of some minor museums, or touched there too lightly, and extends the range to Hampton Court. It also gives complete lists of the open-air statues of London and of those houses that are marked with tablets. Mr. Livens would have made, among other pic tures not here, a drawing of the new Admiralty Arch, had not this been forbidden, during war time, by the authorities. Book Description
Excerpt from Wanderings in Four Continents If, led by inclination or compelled by necessity, you go into the street, you find the space between the sidewalks transformed into a miniature river. In some of the streets the pavements are more than three feet high, and pedes trians walk on them as on the tow-path of a canal, passing from one side of the torrent to the other on small wooden crossings. The comfort that is derived elsewhere in inclement weather from fires may not be hoped for in Buenos Ayres, for the bed-rooms are rarely pro vided with fireplaces. And in cases where they do possess them the chimneys are liable to smoke dreadfully when the north-west wind sweeps over the city. The natives, accustomed to these fea tures of the rainy season in La Plata, look with indifference on the forlorn condition of the stranger within their gates. And the foreigner, thus left to struggle against the coalition of the elements with the thoughtless or selfish indifference of the native population, must resign himself with patience and resignation until the three months of watery affliction shall have passed away. Book Description
Excerpt from The Wanderings of a Temporary Warrior: A Territorial Officer's Narrative of Service (and Sport) In Three Continents "Thunder of thoroughfares; trumpets that blow To battle..." - Longfellow. The outbreak of the Great War naturally caused local scares, many of them ludicrous in character. The formation of a large camp at Winchester, twenty miles away from my home, was held, on high local military authority, to threaten the gravest danger, not only to the morals of that city, but even to those of our own households. Again, it was supposed that flour and other commodities would soon be unobtainable, and a council of war was held, presided over by a local nobleman and a Major-General fresh from Egypt, at which it was decided to buy large quantities of flour and cheese, and store them against impending famine. Volunteers were called for to guard the railway bridges in the vicinity, and some of us spent a night on a lonely bridge, on the Hampshire North Downs, only to incur the wrath of the railway authorities for "butting in" when we were not wanted. But this, and similar incidents, at least served as a prologue to the more serious duties many of us were fated to take up a little later in so many different parts of the world.
