Female terrorists are a rare phenomenon. Less than ten terrorist organizations throughout the world have women members. These terrorist groups are either Marxist (atheist) or Jihadist in their ideologies. Sexual Jihad: The Role of Islam in Female Terrorism ascertains, “What is the role of Islam in female terrorism?” It explores the roles of women in eight jihadist case studies including: Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Boko Haram, the Chechen Separatists, HAMAS, Hezbollah, ISIS, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, and Al Qaeda. Primary sources and secondary sources are used, including research conducted on Palestinian women in Israeli prisons who have been convicted of terrorism. It is argued that are three roles for women in Jihadist terrorism: the disposable, the domestic, and the secretary. The theory posited in this book is that the roles of women in terrorist groups are similar to their cultural/religious roles in society.

This volume explores theoretical discourses in which religion is used to legitimize political violence. It examines the ways in which Christianity and Islam are utilized for political ends, in particular how violence is used (or abused) as an expedient to justify political action. This research focuses on premodern as well as contemporary discourses in the Middle East and Latin America, identifying patterns frequently used to justify the deployment of violence in both hegemonic and anti-hegemonic discourses. In addition, it explores how premodern arguments and authorities are utilized and transformed in order to legitimize contemporary violence as well as the ways in which the use of religion as a means to justify violence alters the nature of conflicts that are not otherwise explicitly religious. It argues that most past and present conflicts, even if the discourses about them are conducted in religious terms, have origins other than religion and/or blend religion with other causes, namely socio-economic and political injustice and inequality. Understanding the use and abuse of religion to justify violence is a prerequisite to discerning the nature of a conflict and might thus contribute to conflict resolution.

With the rise and rise of social media, today’s communication practices are significantly different from those of even the recent past. A key change has been a shift to very small units, exemplified by Twitter and its strict 280-character limit on individual posts. Consequently, highly fragmented communication has become the norm in many contexts. Fragmented Narrative sets out to explore the production and reception of fragmentary stories, analysing the Twitter-based narrative practices of Donald Trump, the Spanish political movement Podemos, and Egyptian activists writing in the context of the 2013 military intervention in Egypt. Sadler draws on narrative theory and hermeneutics to argue that narrative remains a vital means for understanding, allowing fragmentary content to be grasped together as part of significant wholes. Using Heideggerian ontology, he proposes that our capacity to do this is grounded in the centrality of narrative to human existence itself. This study explores the socio-political role of Islamist movements in Arab and Middle Eastern countries. It investigates the effect of resource distribution on the moderation or radicalization of Islamist movements in Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt. It proposes that high resource mobilization and concentration by Islamist movements lead to radicalization, while resource distribution between Islamist and non-Islamist actors results in moderation. The transition process in Arab countries has shown that Islamists' superiority as a social movement brings their political and cultural discourse closer to the mainstream than their secular opponents, such as in Egypt and Sudan, but this has led to political instability, the overthrow of the political process, and the failure to achieve a democratic transition. So, when the inclusion-moderation hypothesis is raised, we should examine which form of inclusion leads to moderation and what conditions exist in the resource distribution structure that can cause radicalization or moderation. In other words, moderation occurs if certain conditions are met in the structure of a balanced or semi-balanced distribution of resources, with a tendency towards non-Islamist forces. This work addresses a void in current scholarly work by offering an in-depth examination of Islamist movements’ influence during the Arab uprisings. It explores the causal link between resource accumulation and the degree of moderation or radicalization within political movements and reveals the circumstances that result in ideological moderation following inclusion.
