Excerpt from Vocabolario Romagnolo-Italiano: Con Appendice Foscolo nel suo Discorso storico sul Decamerone. N iuno può mai, per lungo studio ch'ei facio, divezzarsi affatto dal suo dialetto materno; e, comeche molti il contrastino, non però è men vero chei dialetti diversi hanno per petuamente cospirato a comporre una lingua letteraria e nazionale in Italia, non mai parlata da veruno, intesa sempre da tutti, e scritta più o men bene, secondo 1ngegno e l'arte e il cuore, più che altro, degli scrittori. Ora se questa lingua letteraria s'avesse sempre a scrivere secondo la pro nunzia della lingua parlata, l'ortografia anderebbe trasformata ogni secolo, e nessuna lingua avrebbe fermi principj, nè sicure apparenze. E di fatto ne' libri scritti dopo il secolo XVI l'ortografia fu rinovata fin anche dai Fiorentini, secondo li usi diversi che andavano correndo, e non fu mai ge nerale, nè certa. Il che forse non sarebbe avvenuto se li Academici della Crusca, anzichè desumerla da un dialetto e da una età sola, l'avessero vestigatn nella storia di tutte le lingue, e nelle origini, e nell'indole della Italiana. E tanto si è industriato di fare il Gherardini: se egli ci sia riuscito, il tempo ne sarà giudice. Ma, che che succeda, egli rende sempre ragione delle riforme che va proponendo; e il tempo un giorno o l'altro alla ragione da il suo voto.
