Book Description
Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 2: A Romance of Youth The great saloon Of the New House afforded ex cellent accommodation for the dancers. It Opened on the gardens, which, though not very large, were tastefully laid out, and were this evening brilliantly illuminated. In the smaller saloon the Austrian troop amused those who were not fascinated by waltz or quadrille with acting proverbs: the regular dramatic performance was thought too heavy a business for the evening. There was sufficient amusement for all; and those who did not dance, and to whom proverbs were no novelty, walked and talked, stared at others, and were themselves stared at; and this, perhaps, was the greatest amusement of all. Baron von Ko nigstein did certainly to-night look neither like an unsuccessful gamester nor a designing villain. Among many who were really amusing he was the most so, and, apparently without the least consciousness of it, attracted the admiration of all. To the Trevor party he had attached himself immediately, and was constantly at Lady Madeleine's side, introducing to her, in the course Of the evening, his own and Mr. St. George's particular friends, Mr. And Mrs. Fitzloom. Among many smiling faces Vivian Grey's was clouded; the presence of the Baron annoyed him. When they first met he was conscious that he was stiff and cool. One moment's reflection convinced him of the folly of his conduct, and he made a struggle to be Very civil. In five minutes' time he had involuntarily insulted the Baron, who stared at 'his friend, and evidently did not comprehend him. Book Description
Vivian Grey Volume 2 By Benjamin Disraeli Originally published anonymously, ostensibly by a so-called "man of fashion," the first part caused a considerable sensation in London society. Contemporary reviewers, suspicious of the numerous solecisms contained within the text, eventually identified the young Disraeli (who did not move in high society) as the author. The book is a frequent touchstone for discussions of Disraeli's political and literary career. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book Description
Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 4 The green and bowery Summer had passed away. It was midnight when two horsemen pulled up their steeds beneath a wide oak which, with other lofty trees, skirted the side of a winding road in an extensive forest in the south of Germany. By heavens! Said one, who apparently was the master we must even lay our cloaks I think under this oak; for the road winds again, and assuredly cannot lead now to our village. Book Description
Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 1 of 2 The Young Duke or Henrietta Temple. Even Dis raeli's satiric squibs, in the manner of Lucian and Swift, which seem to us among the most durable ornaments of light literature in the days of William IV., were read and were laughed at, but were not critically appraised. So, too, at the middle period of Disraeli's literary life, such books as Com'ngsby and Tancred were looked upon as amusing commentaries on the prog ress of a strenuous politician, not by any means, or by any responsible person, as possible classics of our language. And at his third period, the ruling criti cism of the hour was aghast at faults which now entertain us, and was blind to sterling merits which we are now ready to acknowledge. Shortly after his death, perhaps his most brilliant apologist was fain to admit that if Disraeli had been undistinguished as a speaker, his novels would have been as the flowers of the field, charming for the day which was passing over them, and then forgotten. It is only within the last decade that a conviction has been gaining ground that some of these books were in themselves durable, not because they were the work of a man who be came Prime Minister of England and made his sover eign Empress of India, but as much or as little as if they had been composed by a recluse in a hermitage. This impression has now become so general with en lightened critics that the danger seems to be that we should underrate certain excesses of rhetoric and the Corinthian mode, the errors of which used to be over emphasized, but should not, in a comparative survey of Victorian literature, be overlooked as serious draw backs to our perfect enjoyment of the high-spirited.
