¡Verdura! – Living a Garden Life celebrates the power of adding more green to your life with 30 simple and budget-friendly gardening projects that promote well-being through plants. From Puerto Rican author and gardening celebrity, Perla Sofía Curbelo Santiago of Agrochic.com, a Spanish-language gardening lifestyle platform, comes this guide to forming a lifelong love of nature, plants, and gardening. Verdura means “greenery” in Spanish, but also refers to any edible plant from the garden. Throughout this book, verdura is used as both a description and an aspiration—it’s all about adding more verdura to your daily life! Perfect for beginners and expert gardeners alike, turning the practice of tending plants into a healthy lifestyle has never been easier. It takes many repetitions to form a habit, and the goal is to use the 30 projects found here to transform the initial spark of joy plants create into a healthy habit that enhances your life in many ways. Indoor and outdoor projects are included, many of which are perfect for small spaces and urban environments. In addition to offering plant-related wellness tips, personal stories of her own garden evolution, and advice on how tending plants can improve both physical and mental health, Perla offers clear step-by-step guidance on project creation. Some of the projects you’ll find inside include: Creating a container planting that appeals to a 13-year-old version of yourself Making a meditation garden or a private healing nook Planting a barefoot garden Performing a quick and easy garden makeover Compiling a garden-tainment kit Upcycling common discards to create a propagation station, a swinging planter, and a birdbath Organizing your garden legacy using a basic guide Also included are alternative plant charts if you’re the kind of gardener who likes lots of plant choices, and section openers that offer a small glimpse of gardening life on the island of Puerto Rico. Green-up your life to reduce stress and add joy with help from ¡Verdura!

Lost Plantations of the South
Author: Marc R. Matrana
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1604734698
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
The great majority of the South's plantation homes have been destroyed over time, and many have long been forgotten. In Lost Plantations of the South, Marc R. Matrana weaves together photographs, diaries and letters, architectural renderings, and other rare documents to tell the story of sixty of these vanquished estates and the people who once called them home. From plantations that were destroyed by natural disaster such as Alabama's Forks of Cypress, to those that were intentionally demolished such as Seven Oaks in Louisiana and Mount Brilliant in Kentucky, Matrana resurrects these lost mansions. Including plantations throughout the South as well as border states, Matrana carefully tracks the histories of each from the earliest days of construction to the often contentious struggles to preserve these irreplaceable historic treasures. Lost Plantations of the South explores the root causes of demise and provides understanding and insight on how lessons learned in these sad losses can help prevent future preservation crises. Capturing the voices of masters and mistresses alongside those of slaves, and featuring more than one hundred elegant archival illustrations, this book explores the powerful and complex histories of these cardinal homes across the South.

Florida's Antebellum Homes
Author: Lewis Nicholas Wynne
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 0738516171
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 148
Book Description
Florida's antebellum architecture reflects the state's singular history and the realities faced and enjoyed by her early citizens. Threats from Native Americans dictated that the homes of early frontiersmen incorporate in their design defensive features, and many felt the need to locate within small towns. Many planters held close family and business ties with the older, more established South, which encouraged elaborate homes that could easily fit into the plantation architecture of South Carolina, Georgia, or Mississippi. Influences from the state's two ruling countries-Spain and England-also gave way to unique design. Florida's Antebellum Homes features images of buildings that incorporate various combinations of these design features. In addition, some of the public structures shown here reflect the emerging senses of personal affluence, civic pride, and political development. Unfortunately, some of these buildings no longer exist; they fell prey to natural catastrophes, unbridled expansion, and the relentless march of Florida's exacting climate. Many, however, remain in pristine condition and invite the public to appreciate them today, much as earlier Floridians reveled in their stateliness.

Semantic Matchmaking with Nonmonotonic Description Logics
Author: S. Grimm
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1614993351
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 278
Book Description
Semantic web has grown into a mature field of research. Its methods find innovative applications on and off the World Wide Web. Its underlying technologies have significant impact on adjacent fields of research and on industrial applications. This new book series reports on the state-of-the-art in foundations, methods, and applications of semantic web and its underlying technologies. It is a central forum for the communication of recent developments and comprises research monographs, textbooks and edited volumes on all topics related to the semantic web. In this first volume several non-monotonic extensions to description logics (DLs) are investigated, namely auto-epistemic DLs, circumscriptive DLs and terminological default rules, all of which extend standard DL inference mechanisms by forms of closed-world and default reasoning associated to common-sense features. A matchmaking framework is established for semantic resource descriptions formulated in the DL formalism that uses various DL inferences to judge resource compatibility. Special emphasis lies on mapping the technical formalities of model-theoretic semantics of DLs to more intuitive notions that abstract from the details of logic for the framework’s easier adoption in applications. The particular contributions of Semantic Matchmaking with Nonmonotonic Description Logics span the fields of non-monotonic reasoning with description logics in artificial intelligence, matchmaking of ontology-based descriptions and semantic web service discovery. A novel tableaux calculus for reasoning in circumscriptive DLs is introduced and it is demonstrated how the various nonmonotonic extensions to description logics can be used to realize common-sense features and local closed-world reasoning in a semantic web setting in general.
