Book Description
A literature study was made of methods for measuring temperatures of hot gases and plasmas, with emphasis on evaluation of non-spectroscopic techniques. For application to measurements on air stabilized plasma jets at temperatures to 8000 K and in the pressure range from 0.01 to 10 atmospheres, an optical technique was chosen, modified for fast response by use of a multiplier phototube as the receiver. The technique involves display on a cathode ray oscilloscope of signals alternately representing a single path and a double path (by means of a mirror) of the image of a portion of the plasma jet, the alternation being at 13. Extension of the range of possible temperature measurement to as high as 10,000 K is possible by interposition between the target and the pyrometer filament of neutral density glass filters, each having a transmissivity of about 4.5%. Book Description
Understanding the behavior of a particle and the interactions between a particle and the plasma surrounding it is important to the development and optimization of the plasma spray coating process. This is an experimental study of the interaction between a subsonic thermal plasma jet and injected nickel-aluminum particles. The velocity, temperature and composition of the gas flow field is mapped using an enthalpy probe/mass spectrometer system. The particle flow field is examined by simultaneously measuring the in-flight size, velocity, and temperature of individual particles. The complex interaction between the gas and particle flow fields is examined by combining the two sets of data. Particle and gas temperatures and velocities are compared in the vicinity of a nominal substrate standoff distance and axially along the median particle trajectory. The temperature and velocity difference is shown to vary substantially depending on the particle's trajectory. By the time a particle on the median trajectory reaches the nominal substrate stand off of 63.5 mm it is transferring it's heat and momentum to the plasma gas.

Book Description
This authoritative reference presents a comprehensive review of the evolution of plasma science and technology fundamentals over the past five decades. One of this field’s principal challenges has been its multidisciplinary nature requiring coverage of fundamental plasma physics in plasma generation, transport phenomena under high-temperature conditions, involving momentum, heat and mass transfer, and high-temperature reaction kinetics, as well as fundamentals of material science under extreme conditions. The book is structured in five distinct parts, which are presented in a reader-friendly format allowing for detailed coverage of the science base and engineering aspects of the technology including plasma generation, mathematical modeling, diagnostics, and industrial applications of thermal plasma technology. This book is an essential resource for practicing engineers, research scientists, and graduate students working in the field.

Book Description
The demand of industry for new composite and functional materials with preset properties has led to increased investigations into processes which occur in plasma jets of complex chemical composition with an additive to disperse particles as well as at their interaction with hard surfaces under the conditions of superfast cooling of the particles which are in complex aggregation state. This Proceedings Volume contains the papers that were presented during the International Workshop ''High-Temperature Dust-Laden Jets in the Processes of Treatment of Powder Materials'', held in Novosibirsk, USSR, 6--8 September 1988. The scope of the Workshop incorporated the following topics: -- Modelling of the processes of interphase momentum, heat and mass transfer in dust-laden plasma jets as well as interaction between the particles which are in complex aggregation state and the base. -- Diagnostics of the parameters of gas disperse phases in high-temperature dust-laden flows. -- Processes of the formation of plasma sprayed coatings. -- Processes of treatment and production of powder materials.
