Book Description
What if value is neither an intrinsic quality of an object, nor a reflection of a subjects preferencesbut rather something that is organized and brought into existence through mechanisms, technologies and practices of valuation? This edited book addresses the question of valuation theoretically and through empirical analyses of diverse objects of valuations, such as university ranking lists, ice skating scoring, wind power, insurances, gold and big data. The theoretical inspiration is interdisciplinary and the volume brings together scholars from economic sociology, accounting, organization studies, and science and technology studies with the aim of understanding through which practices and processes things are made valuable. Valuing is understood as a plural activity where pricing things is just one way of signifying value. Socio-economic reality is constituted through different orders of worth that are grounded in the way people praise and prize things. The book is arranged around five concerns that underpin the debate about making things valuable. These concerns are: calculating/economizing; commensurating/switching; visualizing/hiding; modelling/tracing; and knowing/disciplining.

Book Description
Come and see that our purpose as Christians is not about being useful but about being known by God and enjoying him. We all want to be useful to God, but often we feel that we're not, or, because of illness or other difficulties, that we can't be as active as we'd like to be. Liz Carter wants to rescue us from the spiral of feeling useless that we get caught in, and to show us that being useful isn't what Christianity is about. In fact, the Bible barely talks about God using people at all. Weaving together insightful scriptural analysis and beautifully told stories, Liz takes us on a journey to see what the Bible really says about weakness, identity, and God's purposes for us: helping us to see ourselves and our relationship with God in an entirely different and much more glorious way. Readers will discover that our purpose as Christians is not about being useful but about being known by God and enjoying him. This book is particularly helpful for those struggling with long-term physical or mental illness, but it's also a great encouragement to Christians who feel that they are not good enough or useful enough to God for other reasons. Questions at the end of each chapter make this a helpful resource to read with a friend or in groups.

Book Description
Finding the Valuable Person proposes a new form of therapy. The big theme is that experiences of being devalued when we are not seen or heard, diminished or suffer indignities evoke responses that show up in distress clients bring. These reactions show a prime human need for our personhood to be valuable and validated that generates soul-hungers (for connection, desire, significance, and hope) that are largely unconscious. It is a fundamental drive that can be explored with clients in the way we are relational, embodied makers of meaning and respond to agency and dignity. This constitutes four domains of the REMA approach to therapy developed in this book. Every counseling approach has its presuppositions: most describe the human person as an individual entity, separated from social context. REMA pays attention to both. REMA is theologically attuned but also incorporates realities such as gender and race that have reshaped society profoundly. For the alignment of biblical faith and counseling psychology, it is profoundly important to be attuned in both directions. REMA is not only an innovative theoretical approach, it is a working model, currently offered in a community setting but of wider application. Anyone can use it!
