Book Description
This book discusses the epistemic foundation of the heuristic construct ‘vagabond’ and the convergence between the politics of itinerancy and that of dissent in the context of South Asia. It describes the fraught relationship between ‘native’ itinerant practices and techniques of governmentality which have furnished different categorizations and taxonomies of mobility. The book demonstrates the historical seismic breaks – from the Orientalist to the post-Orientalist, from the premodern to the modern, and from the colonial to the post-colonial – in the representation of the vagabond in the juridico-political imagination, in historiography and cultural articulation. For instance, the drunk European sailor, the quasi-religious mendicant, and the helpless famine refugee have all been referred to as ‘vagabonds’ in the colonial archive. This book examines the histories and conditions behind these conceptual overlaps, as well as the uncanny associations among categories that uneasily coexist and mirror each other as subsets of a vast range of phenomena, which may loosely be called ‘vagabond(age)’. This volume will be of interest to students and researchers of literature, cultural studies, colonial and post-colonial studies, history, migration studies, sociology, and South Asia studies.

Book Description
Jean Ducat is the leading French authority on classical Sparta. Here is what is likely to be seen as his magnum opus. Ducat systematically collects, translates and evaluates the sources - famous and obscure alike - for Spartan education. He deploys his familiar combination of good judgement and uncompromising recognition of the limits to our knowledge, while drawing at times on aspects of French structuralism. This book is likely to become the definitive reference on its subject, while also informing and provoking the future work of others. Sparta was admitted by Greeks generally, even by its Athenian enemies, to be the School of Hellas. Ducat's work is thus a major contribution to our understanding of Greek ideas, and indeed to the history of education.

Book Description
"The statement of our findings has gradually assumed the scope of a text or reference book, the first on the subject. We hope for our science the growth that other sciences have experienced; there is great necessity for further research, but extensions and modifications are to be embodied only as their truth is assured. It would take long to specify the parts of our subject with which people of various affairs should be familiar. Judges, other court officers, including lawyers, and institutional authorities, should have a particularly well-rounded knowledge of the whole field. Without the most thoughtful observation a great deal is hidden from view, as may be easily appreciated by consideration of our cases and causal types. Psychologists, physicians, religious leaders, school people, and, not least of all, parents, should be in possession of many of our fundamental facts. All who have to deal with offenders need the utmost possible understandings of human beings"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved).

Book Description
Robert A. Nye places in historical context a medical concept of deviance that developed in France in the last half of the nineteenth century, when medical models of cultural crisis linked thinking about crime, mental illness, prostitution, alcoholism, suicide, and other pathologies to French national decline.
