Book Description
Excerpt from Animal Experimentation: A Series of Statements Indicating Its Value to Biological and Medical Science The following are the statements of various remonstrants to proposed legislation to further restrict experimentation upon animals for medical and biological purposes in the Common wealth of Massachusetts. They were called out at the legis lative hearings upon this subject in the spring of 1901. The agitation in favor of such further restriction has been carried on for several years, and the views of the remonstrants are nowhere to be found in print. Many of the friends of research have expressed a wish to have some document to which reference may be made for the facts in the case, and it has therefore been decided to publish this book. It contains, not a shorthand report of what was said at the hearings, but the main points of what was so said, with additions from some who were not heard for lack of time, or because of absence from the country. In each case the writer has corrected his manuscript before publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Propositions in Regard to Animal Vaccination: Read Before the New York Academy of Medicine, December 4, 1873 For the sake of comparison, we must first establish a standard of the degree of success which may fairly be expected to be attained, under ordinarily favorable cir cumstances, by the arm-to-arm method. We are not called upon to accept, as this standard, that phenomenal degree of success which has sometimes been reached by vaccinators of exceptional skill, such, for instance, as Mr. Marson, who, as stated by Seaton hand-book of Vaccination, London, 1868, p. Once did over 2, 000 vaccinations Without a single failure. This degree of success, I repeat, we are not to accept as the stand ard, although some of the results which I shall call your attention to, are even more remarkable. Book Description
Excerpt from Animal Experimentation and Medical Progress I have been so frequently asked by earnest inquirers after truth for information as to animal experimentation, and especially for my own publications, that I have con cluded to publish these papers in a more permanent and accessible form than in medical and other journals. My thanks are due to the editors and publishers of the journals, etc., in which these papers first appeared, for permission to republish them in this volume. The papers appear in chronological order. Hence it is important that all their statements of methods, results, and statistics should be considered in connection with the date of the publication of each paper. In some cases I have given in footnotes later information and statistics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Influence of Animal Experimentation on Medical Science From the beginning of history until the present century, medicine has been either absolutely denied a place among the Sciences or else branded as inexact, empyrical and laggard in its development and progress. Although dealing, as it does, with the most complex prob lems of human existence, where, as in no other science, every law of nature is controlled and modified by that unknown force we call vitality, Medicine has nevertheless, from the very first, been forced to meet the demand for complete knowledge. To it alone, the answer we do not yet know all has been denied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
