Book Description
What are the challenges and action points for agricultural sustainability in Sub-Saharan Africa? This open access collection of papers offers technical analyses, policy recommendations and an overview of success stories to date. Each carefully selected paper provides valuable insights for improved policy making and defines relevant strategic priorities on Africa’s sustainable transformation process, which is in line with the international development agenda. Although agriculture remains the main source of income for Africa’s population, the sector is rain-fed subjecting it to the vagaries of weather and climate change. This volume demonstrates the rationale of developing a competitive, inclusive and sustainable agribusiness sector for Africa’s food security and structural transformation. From the impact of Bioenergy crop adoption and Drought Index Insurance to Agro-Industrialization, this volume is important reading for individual researchers, academic associations and professional bodies interested in African agricultural development.

Book Description
Originally published in 1978. The question of how best to use our various resources has become one of crucial importance as we face today's many economic problems. In this second edition, the authors are concerned with decisions on rural issues in a climate of financial cut-backs, which emphasise the need for identifying the most efficient public choices. With a refreshing directness they consider immediate problems of rural resources, such as the growth of the public sector, fluctuating commodity prices, dislocation in the land market, pollution, recreation pressure, and modernisation of an outdated settlement structure. In Part one, chapters deal in turn with the economics of public decisions, the application of quantitative models in the development context, the planning system as it applies to rural areas, and the problems of conserving the rural environment. Part two deals with the individual topics: land use and conversion to other uses, recreational use of the countryside, conservation economics, rural population, the labour market and farm policies, rural transport, and rural settlement. The authors conclude with an examination of the Cow Green Reservoir as a case-study of a rural public issue which had to be resolved. This revised and considerably expanded edition focusses specifically on the economic aspects of the subject and provides further illustrations, diagrams and examples.

Book Description
Building on the innovative Institute of Medicine reports To Err Is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, Quality Through Collaboration: The Future of Rural Health offers a strategy to address the quality challenges in rural communities. Rural America is a vital, diverse component of the American community, representing nearly 20% of the population of the United States. Rural communities are heterogeneous and differ in population density, remoteness from urban areas, and the cultural norms of the regions of which they are a part. As a result, rural communities range in their demographics and environmental, economic, and social characteristics. These differences influence the magnitude and types of health problems these communities face. Quality Through Collaboration: The Future of Rural Health assesses the quality of health care in rural areas and provides a framework for core set of services and essential infrastructure to deliver those services to rural communities. The book recommends: Adopting an integrated approach to addressing both personal and population health needs Establishing a stronger health care quality improvement support structure to assist rural health systems and professionals Enhancing the human resource capacity of health care professionals in rural communities and expanding the preparedness of rural residents to actively engage in improving their health and health care Assuring that rural health care systems are financially stable Investing in an information and communications technology infrastructure It is critical that existing and new resources be deployed strategically, recognizing the need to improve both the quality of individual-level care and the health of rural communities and populations.

Book Description
This book aims to acquaint researchers, primarily in local organizations, with data they can use to describe and better understand rural communities. Chapter 1 describes a few basic data concepts for readers who are not experienced data users. Chapter 2 provides an overview of major data sources that can be used to describe rural communities, including the Census Bureau's decennial and current population programs; the Census Bureau's agricultural, economic, and government censuses; personal income data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis; and labor market data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The chapter also explains where researchers can find data issued by these agencies, and where they can find more information by state or region. Chapters 3-5 show how researchers can use federal, state, and local data to understand social and economic change in very diverse rural communities. Data sources cover general population, education, labor force, income, housing, health, industry-specific data, and local government. Sample counties from the Economic Research Service County Typology groups are used to put the data sources in context. Appendices provide postal and electronic addresses and phone numbers for state and federal offices that house or collect data, and give details about Census Bureau publications and economic census programs. Contains 49 references, 36 data tables and figures, a glossary, and an index. (SV)
