This work describes the technological, legal, social, and ethical facets of illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. Geared toward parents, teachers, librarians, students, and any other computer user engaged in file sharing, this book will help readers to understand all forms of traditional and digital copyright violations of protected music, movies, and software. To date over 18,000 P2P users have been sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Most of these users have been college students and parents of high-school students. While word of these law suits are spreading, and many parents fear that their children may be using a family computer to illegally download and share copyrighted works, few supervising adults have the technical knowledge needed to determine whether and to what extent pirating may be occurring via a computer and Internet connection they are legally responsible for. Additionally, while P2P networks are filled with millions of users with billions of copyrighted files, few users understand the ways in which they are illegally using computers and other mobile electronic devices to download protected content. While describing both technical and social issues, this book primarily focuses on the social aspects of illegal file sharing, and provides technical concepts at a general level. Wide-spread usage of peer-to-peer file-sharing began in the late 1990's with Napster-a network that allowed users to share digital music without going through legal channels to purchase the copyrighted material. Since Napster debuted, over forty file-sharing applications that allow users to trade music, movies and computer software with each other have been created, costing the copyright holders of these materials billions of dollars in royalties. Today, peer-to-peer networks allow movie file-sharing and free long-distance voice phone calls. Since these uses are still emerging, a close look at the music peer-to-peer market may provide a useful guide to the likely evolution of the newer peer-to-peer applications. Drawing on interviews, primary survey data and secondary sources, this paper tracks the growth of peer-to-peer file-sharing and responses to it from the music industry, regulators, and the public. The investigation begins with the factors responsible for the growth of a peer-to-peer network, the factors that limit the growth of such a network, and how the dynamics of a file-sharing network change due to outside influences. With this background, we look at the current policies of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Internet service providers (ISPs) that provide Internet connectivity to consumers, and peer-to-peer application/network developers. Finally, based on models of the peer-to-peer system, recommendations are presented for future policies of all actors.

The purpose of "Music Piracy Culture on the Internet research" was to identify the motivations behind online music piracy on the Internet through Peer-to-peer (P2P) Networks and opinions on copyright laws. The research was carried out as a Master's Thesis in the Digital Culture program at the University of Jyväskylä. Quantitative research methodology was utilized in the form of questionnaires, which were distributed for two weeks through the mailing list at the University of Jyväskylä and personal invitations. Analysis of the questionnaires revealed opinions that people conduct music file sharing on P2P networks because it is convenient, promotes musicians and is environmentally friendly. In addition, the research discovered the growing popularity of online streaming as an alternative to downloading. Based on the research, some recommendations that can be proposed to music producers and musicians in the near future include; more education on copyright issues, more promotion of online music streaming, promoting downloads of legal music files as an environmentally-friendly choice and making online music shopping more convenient for customers.
