If you’re looking for beautiful scenery filled with lush greenery and azure waters, this is not the place. Rather, this book looks at the most beautiful aspect of a place: the lives of its people. Southeast Asia, a region internationally recognized synonymously with ASEAN, consists of ten countries: Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, and Singapore. In the blink of an eye, 10 years have passed since author's first book hit the shelves. author has since developed an appreciation for ASEAN and their collective efforts for the well-being of the people in each country; Singapore’s efforts to lead the region in its development have also been an immense source of pride. The region’s growth and resilience have once again inspired the author to pick up his dusty old camera, and to tell a story through his photographs. This time, the author hopes to capture and present the candid livelihoods of each region’s people. Through this, the author hopes to introduce to the world the wonderous, ecstatic region that is ASEAN, filled with colours and stories. Rather than one single book, the author plans on releasing a collection of 10, one for each country. And each country’s edition shall be published during the annual “ASEAN Summit”, which is held across the 10 countries. Last but not least, the author plans to save Singapore’s edition for last. Knowing Singapore best out of the 10 countries, the author will be presenting Singapore in the most unique and special way possible, which shall remain a secret for now. Hence, the author invite reader to stay tuned, and look forward to the final edition patiently with him!

Southeast Asia: The Long Road Ahead (2nd Edition)
Author: Chong Yah Lim
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
ISBN: 9813106220
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 475
Book Description
Latest Edition: Southeast Asia: The Long Road Ahead (3rd Edition) Southeast Asia is going through tremendous changes. The market-oriented economies of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand have been showing robust growth, particularly before the Asian financial crisis of 1997/98. The transitional economies of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam are also exhibiting signs of economic awakening and revival after years of internal political and social turmoil. Despite these encouraging signs, the region still has a long road ahead to achieve developed nation status. Southeast Asia: The Long Road Ahead is a serious and concise study on various important economic aspects of Southeast Asia. Existing economic studies on the region are mainly topical in nature. Most of the publications only attempt to offer a partial treatment of the issues and fail to examine these issues in a holistic manner. The objective of this book is to provide a more complete cross-country discussion on the economic issues and problems facing Southeast Asia. Besides critically examining the multiple facets of changes and problems that have been and will be encountered by Southeast Asia, the book also presents a lucid exposition on the prospects of the region. However, it does not stop there. It moves on to provide pointers and suggestions on how Southeast Asian countries should proceed with their development options and processes. The book should be of interest to economists, graduate students on Southeast Asia and all those who want to have a better knowledge and understanding of the important Southeast Asian region.

China Unveiled: Insights into Chinese Strategic Thinking
Author:
Publisher: KW Publishers Pvt Ltd
ISBN: 9385714988
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 219
Book Description
This book seeks to afford an objective, incisive insight into China. Written by a veteran Indian analyst with over 25 years of experience monitoring developments relating to contemporary China, it is an attempt to inform and promote understanding of China’s policies and actions and, especially, the implications for India. The 32 essays that comprise the book present a comprehensive tour de horizon of present-day China ranging across a variety of subjects. Each of the aspects touched upon have direct relevance for the international community and particularly for India and the Asia-Pacific region. The first section deals exclusively with China’s currently evolving internal political situation. The outline sketches of China’s two top leaders suggest their personalities influence Beijing’s policies and that China’s domestic and foreign policies will undoubtedly bear their imprimatur. Other articles examine the equally important and rapidly evolving political scenario in China, especially concerning the selection of cadres to the Chinese Communist Party’s highest echelons. The absence of veteran leaders of pre-eminence and unquestioned authority has accentuated competition within the Chinese Communist Party and indicators of potential discord, like the political upheaval involving ex-Politburo member Bo Xilai, have been identified. The book notes the attempt by China’s leadership to rearrange national economic developmental priorities to remain competitive in a changing international environment and includes a debate centering on the Yuan rivaling the US dollar. Two articles assess the implications of China’s maritime ambitions and Cyber strategy, both of which are centerpieces of China’s military strategy. Other articles discuss in some detail the India-China relationship, China’s relations with some of India’s neighbours, and Sino-US relations -- described by Beijing as China’s single, most important relationship. A subject usually less focused upon though of vital strategic importance to India, namely China’s strategy regarding Tibetan Buddhists and the Dalai Lama, is scrutinized in the book’s concluding section. This includes the developmental activity in Tibet and plans to divert the waters of the Brahmaputra, both of which have a serious potential to impact on India. For the facility of easy reading, this book contains no citations or references.

Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
Bringing together an international line up of contributors, this book examines South Korea’s foreign policy strategies designed to cope with the challenges of the post-Cold War regional order and the emergence of a "Korean paradox". Focusing on non-material factors in shaping the decision-making processes of primary actors, such as traditions, beliefs, and identities, this book begins by analysing the emergence of the "Asian Paradox" and explores how different political traditions have influenced South Korea’s foreign and security policies. In the second part (from Chapter 4), this book goes on to deal directly with the key issues in South Korea’s foreign policy today, with an emphasis on the progressive and conservative approaches to the challenges the country faces. This includes the North Korean threat, the alliance with the U.S., relations with China and Russia, the complicated relationship with Japan, and the emerging role of South Korea outside of Northeast Asia. An innovative study of the domestic sources of South Korean foreign policy, The Korean Paradox investigates South Korea’s growing role at both regional and global levels. As such, it will be useful to students and scholars of Korean Studies, International Relations and East Asian Studies more generally.

Regional Security in Southeast Asia
Author: Mely Caballero-Anthony
Publisher: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
ISBN: 9812302611
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
The book examines ASEAN’s mechanisms in managing challenges and threats to regional security. Its extensive analyses of the ASEAN story of managing regional security cover the different phases of ASEAN’s development as a regional organization and explore the perceptible changes that have occurred in regional mechanisms of conflict management. The book also examines the roles of relevant actors beyond the states of ASEAN and the key interactions that have evolved over time, which have been instrumental in moving regional mechanisms beyond the ASEAN way. The book argues that the ASEAN way has not been impervious to change. As the association finds its way through periods of crises and continues to confront the many challenges ahead, ASEAN and its mechanisms are already being transformed beyond the narrow confines of the modalities associated with the ASEAN way. The changes in the political and security landscape of the region, as well as the democratic transitions taking place in some member states, have set the stage for a much more dynamic set of regional actors and processes that bring into question the kind of regionalism that is now taking place in the region. This book therefore attempts to capture these evolving dynamics and examines the way regionalism is changing in Southeast Asia.
