The time-dependent, chemically reacting, viscous fluid dynamics within the chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) flow field are simulated using the unsteady, laminar, multi-component Navier-Stokes equations. The solutions of these equations are generated within simulations of COIL hardware at standard operating conditions; conditions predicted in previous simulations to be unsteady. These current simulations ascertain the effect of the flow unsteadiness upon the laser gain through Doppler broadening of the spectral lineshape induced by the bulk movement of the gas. The results from the simulations demonstrate that the presence of bulk flow rotation associated with the unsteady vortex generation influences the temperature determined from the resulting lineshapes; this result has direct implications for experiments where spectroscopically measured lineshapes are utilized to determine flow temperatures. Additional simulations are used to test varying fidelity within the COIL finite-rate chemistry mechanism in the presence of the flow unsteadiness and H20 vapor condensation. The same unsteady, laminar, multi-component Navier-Stokes simulation methodology is applied to new COIL mixing nozzle concepts with the goal of utilizing the unsteadiness flow to improve device performance. Experimental planar laser induced iodine fluorescence data for these nozzle concepts are directly compared to simulation data in a newly developed methodology for COIL model validation.

A method of characteristics technique for one-dimensional unsteady flow with an indefinite number of discontinuities in a varied area channel has been developed. The technique is an improvement of the Hartree technique. The technique has the desirable features of both the grid of characteristics method and the inverse specified solution point method. In the present method the solution points are determined by the intersection of right-running wave characteristics and specified constant time lines. The algorithm permits the formation of an indefinite number of right-running shocks and left-running shocks in the flow field. The shocks can dissipate, combine or depart from the channel. Shocks of opposite families can cross each other. Left running shocks can move upstream, downstream or remain stationary. A contact surface can be analyzed. A fluid particle can be followed in the flow. A numerical algorithm for computing internal flows of the type encountered in the start of gas dynamic lasers has been developed and programmed. This book contains selected papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Unsteady Combustion", which was held in Praia da Granja, Portugal, 6-17 September 1993. Approximately 100 delegates from 14 countries attended. The Institute was the most recent in a series beginning with "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", held in Vimeiro, Portugal 1987 and followed by "Combusting Flow Diagnostics" conducted in Montechoro, Portugal in 1990. Together, these three Institutes have covered a wide range of experimental and theoretical topics arising in the research and development of combustion systems with particular emphasis on gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. The emphasis has evolved roughly from instrumentation and experimental techniques to the mixture of experiment, theory and computational work covered in the present volume. As the title of this book implies, the chief aim of this Institute was to provide a broad sampling of problems arising with time-dependent behaviour in combustors. In fact, of course, that intention encompasses practically all possibilities, for "steady" combustion hardly exists if one looks sufficiently closely at the processes in a combustion chamber. The point really is that, apart from the excellent paper by Bahr (Chapter 10) discussing the technology of combustors for aircraft gas turbines, little attention is directed to matters of steady performance.
