Book Description
This is essentially a love story of the Great War inspired by a recently unearthed family collection of more than 100 letters, running to more than 240 pages, written between 1915 and 1919 by Fred Allwood to his sweetheart Phyllis James. What these letters offer us is incredible detail about the life that he led for over 3 years on the Western Front. Written as historical fiction, the main characters and events are portrayed with historical accuracy and Freds letters, with their minutiae of detail, are woven into the story in their original form. His words tell the story, not of the fighting and the dreadfulness of the conflict but of his love, his doubts and his fears. The story traces four principal characters, real people from the Kalgan River near Albany in Western Australia, and tells of how the war impacted on them all and those around them. I am aware that other authors have drawn on primary sources to tell of such war experiences but by creating a narrative from real events and including such a volume of primary material I hope this work will bring a different perspective to such an immense event that is looming in our consciousness with the approach of the ANZAC centenary in Australia. Book Description
Neuromonitoring is the tool of trade in intensive care, and should incorporate cutting edge technology with patience, repeated clinical observation, careful identification of neuroworsening. The aim of the book is to be of practical use, and to assist the clinical practice of the busy physician. The clinical examination belongs to the introductory section of the book, and an abundance of technology, with specific emphasis on the importance of intracranial pressure, comes in the following parts. Since the patient with an injured brain can have chances only if other organs and systems (as the lungs, and the acid-base equilibrium etc.) are preserved, a section of the book covers the interactions between the affected brain and other organs. The way the brain reacts to different insults has common aspects, as inflammatory responses, edema etc., but also specific features. Sections five to nine summarize the most relevant pathologies, from ischemic to hemorrhagic lesions, trauma, tumors etc. and also mentions new‑comers, as the specific problems related to the expanding field of neuroradiological interventions. Finally, neurointensive care does not exist without knowledgeable nurses. The intracranial pressure measurement starts (or unfortunately ends) with a catheter well maintained, and that becomes vital when the drainage of hydrocephalus is concerned. Dealing with patients with severe brain damage has plenty of ethical implications, up to the problems related to brain death and organ donation. This book is published in two volumes.

Book Description
This text contains the scientific contributions to the Fourth International Symposium on Sphingolipids, Sphingo lipidoses and Allied Disorders held at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center on October 25-27, 1971. These meetings were conducted under the auspices of the Isaac Albert Research Institute of the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association, Inc. Four symposia, held in 1958, 1961, 1965 and 1971 were designed to gather the most relevant and innovative of the laboratory and field studies concerned with these hereditary disorders. The texts generated by these periodic meetings have mirrored the increasing absorption of the scientific community in the problems of sphingolipid metabolism. The first meeting in 1958 consisted of but twelve pre sentations, the majority emanating from local laboratories. The current sessions contain 48 scientific presentations by scientists from nine countries and demonstrate the increas ingly diversified techniques and approaches employed in the study of these diseases. Many of the authors, in exploring data on the mucopolysaccharidoses and leucodystrophies, as well as the sphingolipidoses, have given recognition to those biochemical areas held in common by these otherwise diverse disease processes. The problems of prevention and therapy of these diseases have been considered by some of the contributors. Laboratory screening procedures designed to detect carriers of the va rious lipidoses are now available and the experiences of some laboratories in this area are summarized within this volume. The prospective identification of heterozygotes may indeed become a powerful adjunct in genetic counseling.
