Book Description
Excerpt from Unitarian Catechism The preface by Mr. Savage gives the reasons, clearly and concisely, why a book like this is needed. It answers a great demand, and it will supply a serious deficiency. Having had the privilege of reading the contents very thoroughly, I gladly record my satisfaction in the character of the work, my hope of its Wide acceptance and use, my appreciation of the author's motives in preparing it. The questions and answers allow Of supplementing, of individual handling, Of personal direction. It is not a hard-and-fast production. There is a large liberty of detail, explanation and unfolding. The doctrinal positions are in accord with rational religion and liberal Christianity, the critical judg ments are based on modern scholarship, and the great aim throughout is to assist an inquirer or pupil to a positive, permanent faith. If any one finds comments and criticisms which at first sight seem needless, let it be remembered that a Unitarian catechism must give reasons, point out errors, and trace causes: it cannot simply dogmatize. I am Sure that in the true use Of this book great gains will come to our Sunday-schools, to searchers after truth, to our cause. Book Description
Excerpt from Luther's Smaller Catechism: Translated From the Original That we should so fear and love God, as not to curse, swear, conjure, lie, or deceive in his name; but call upon him in every time of need, and worship him with prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. The scriptures narrate the decalogue without divis1ons, and there existed a difference of opinion, even before the time of Christ, as to the manner in which these precepts ought to be divided. The division above given, is that which has been received by the greater part of the Christian church since the apostolic age. Another division has been adopted by some churches, according to which the above first com mandment 18 divided into two, and the ninth and tenth are united into one. It IS a matter of triļ¬‚ing importance which is adopted, provided the whole decalogue be retained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Catechism on the Seven Sacraments It may be necessary to inform the reader, that the following Catechism was undertaken, in the first instance, for the use and benefit of the Author's children. Having been obliged, during the past year, for the health of a member of his family, to reside for some months in France; the services of the Roman Catholic Church, naturally attracted the attention of children, and induced them to put many questions respecting the ceremonies and offices which they frequently witnessed. This circumstance suggested the idea of drawing up, for their use, a catechism, which might give them a knowledge of the Roman Catholic Religion, and of the value of their own. The subject of ceremonies, however, was so extensive and diversified, and at the same time calculated to give such trivial notions of Christianity, that it was found advisable to drop the distinct consideration of them, and to confine the attention to some more substantial parts of the Roman Catholic system. Book Description
Excerpt from The Young Communicant's Catechism A. It is God's agreement with Adam and Eve, wherein he promised them life upon their perfect obedience to his law, and threatened death upon their disobedience. Q. How can we be charged with Adam's guilt, seeing we were not existent when he sinned? A. Because, when the covenant was made with Adam, he acted as a public person, representing his whole posterity, who were then in his loins; and thus the covenant being made with them in him, they sinned in him, and fell with him, Rom. 5: 12, 1 Cor. 15: 21392. Book Description
Excerpt from The Assembly's Shorter Catechism Catechetically Illustrated and Practically Applied: Adapted for Public and Private Instruction, From Which Everything Is Carefully Excluded Except What Is to Be Found in the Question Under Consideration The following Catechism was written many years ago, solely for the Author's own guidance when teaching a Sabbath School, and without any view to its ever being made public. Since then, various individuals capable of judging, and who feel a deep interest in the religious education of the young, have urged its publication, as in their opinion calculated to assist Sabbath School Teachers and Heads of Families in imparting to those under them a knowledge of the elements of divine truth, from the simple and practical way in which the, truth is endeavoured to be brought out; and hence it appears in the same form in which it was used, with the few remarks at the end of each question, winding up the exercise of the evening.
