The questions and answers allow Of supplementing, of individual handling, Of personal direction. It is not a hard-and-fast production. There is a large liberty of detail, explanation and unfolding. The doctrinal positions are in accord with rational religion and liberal Christianity, the critical judg ments are based on modern scholarship, and the great aim throughout is to assist an inquirer or pupil to a positive, permanent faith. If any one finds comments and criticisms which at first sight seem needless, let it be remembered that a Unitarian catechism must give reasons, point out errors, and trace causes: it cannot simply dogmatize. I am Sure that in the true use Of this book great gains will come to our Sunday-schools, to searchers after truth, to our cause. The scriptures narrate the decalogue without divis1ons, and there existed a difference of opinion, even before the time of Christ, as to the manner in which these precepts ought to be divided. The division above given, is that which has been received by the greater part of the Christian church since the apostolic age. Another division has been adopted by some churches, according to which the above first com mandment 18 divided into two, and the ninth and tenth are united into one. Excerpt from A Catechism on the Seven Sacraments It may be necessary to inform the reader, that the following Catechism was undertaken, in the first instance, for the use and benefit of the Author's children. Having been obliged, during the past year, for the health of a member of his family, to reside for some months in France; the services of the Roman Catholic Church, naturally attracted the attention of children, and induced them to put many questions respecting the ceremonies and offices which they frequently witnessed. This circumstance suggested the idea of drawing up, for their use, a catechism, which might give them a knowledge of the Roman Catholic Religion, and of the value of their own. The subject of ceremonies, however, was so extensive and diversified, and at the same time calculated to give such trivial notions of Christianity, that it was found advisable to drop the distinct consideration of them, and to confine the attention to some more substantial parts of the Roman Catholic system.
