Book Description
How academics and researchers can influence education policy: putting research in a policy context, finding unexpected allies, interacting with politicians, and more. Scholarly books and journal articles routinely close with policy recommendations. Yet these recommendations rarely reach politicians. How can academics engage more effectively in the policy process? In Teach Truth to Power, David Garcia offers a how-to guide for scholars and researchers who want to influence education policy, explaining strategies for putting research in a policy context, getting “in the room” where policy happens, finding unexpected allies, interacting with politicians, and more. Countering conventional wisdom about research utilization (also referred to as knowledge mobilization), Garcia explains that engaging in education policy is not a science, it is a craft—a combination of acquired knowledge and intuition that must be learned through practice. Engaging in policy is an interpersonal process; academics who hope to influence policy have to get face-to-face with the politicians who create policy. Garcia’s experience as trusted insider, researcher, and political candidate make him uniquely qualified to offer a roadmap that connects research to policy. He explains that academics can leverage their content expertise to build relationships with politicians (even before they are politicians); demonstrates the effectiveness of the research one-pager; and shows how academics can teach politicians to be champions of research.

Book Description
Feminist theory has been widely translated, influencing the humanities and social sciences in many languages and cultures. However, these theories have not made as much of an impact on the discipline that made their dissemination possible: many translators and translation scholars still remain unaware of the practices, purposes and possibilities of gender in translation. Translating Women revives the exploration of gender in translation begun in the 1990s by Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood’s Re-belle et infidèle/The Body Bilingual (1992), Sherry Simon’s Gender in Translation (1996), and Luise von Flotow’s Translation and Gender (1997). Translating Women complements those seminal texts by providing a wide variety of examples of how feminist theory can inform the study and practice of translation. Looking at such diverse topics as North American chick lit and medieval Arabic, Translating Women explores women in translation in many contexts, whether they are women translators, women authors, or women characters. Together the contributors show that feminist theory can apply to translation in many new and unexplored ways and that it deserves the full attention of the discipline that helped it become internationally influential.

Book Description
In the tapestry of history, the disability rights movement stands as a vibrant and powerful thread, woven with countless stories of courage, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of justice. This story, "Embrace the Shade," is a tribute to that legacy, a glimpse into the lives of those who dared to challenge the status quo and fought for a world where accessibility and inclusion were not just ideals but realities. This story is not just about a young woman named Saniyah Blake and her journey of self-discovery; it is about a generation that refused to be silenced, that refused to be defined by limitations imposed upon them. It is about the collective spirit of a movement that demanded change, that fought for the right to be seen, to be heard, and to be embraced for who they truly are. Through Saniyah's journey, readers will witness the pivotal moments in the fight for disability rights, from the Disability Crawl to the 504 Sit-Down Protest, and ultimately, the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. These events, though historical, continue to resonate with the ongoing struggles for accessibility and inclusion in our society. "Embrace the Shade" is more than just a story; it is an invitation to reflect, to engage, and to participate in the ongoing fight for justice and equality. It is a reminder that every individual, regardless of their abilities or differences, has the power to make a difference.

Book Description
I write of ladybugs, triggerfish, and magpies, of holy moments in such places as Iona, Scotland, the Rockies, Florida, North Carolina, and my own household. I consider the loss of Miss Waldron’s Red Colobus, a warning from Inuit goddess Sedna, and war’s tragedy in Iraq. My work has roots nourished by growing up with a farming and gardening family in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania, teaching and learning with my students and colleagues at Eckerd College, being a member of the Shalem Society for Contemplative Leadership, and participating in Presbyterians for Earth Care and other eco-justice ministries. My poetic quest is to hold in tension the opposites of a celebration of the natural world and, in a time of great destruction, a call for its repair. I intend to evoke a saving love for the bodymindspirit of this amazing planet that is our home.
