Book Description
"My God!" he yelled. "What's happening now?" Stevens stared. Then he started abruptly to his feet. Even afterwards, when he looked back on the incident, he could never actually decide what really happened. He had a persistent, oddly unshakable memory of a man flowing suddenly into liquid. Inside the blue and gray uniform of the Interstellar Passenger Service, the man began to melt, to change into a thick gooey substance that dripped and trickled away between the rising pillars of steel. Desperately, he fought down the rising sense of nausea that tugged at the muscles of his stomach. The picture was so utterly impossible that he screwed his eyes tightly to shut it out of his mind. When he looked again, there was nothing there and Blair was looking across at him, his jaw slack and an expression of stark disbelief in his dark eyes.

The Centauri Device
Author: M. John Harrison
Publisher: Gateway
ISBN: 0575088052
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 159
Book Description
John Truck was to outward appearances just another lowlife spaceship captain. But he was also the last of the Centaurans, or at least half of him was, which meant that he was the only person who could operate the Centauri Device, a sentient bomb which might hold the key to settling a vicious space war. M. John Harrison's classic novel turns the conventions of space opera on their head, and is written with the precision and brilliance for which is famed.

Centauri Dreams
Author: Paul Gilster
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475738943
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 308
Book Description
I wrote this book because I wanted to learn more about interstel lar flight. Not the Star Trek notion of tearing around the Galaxy in a huge spaceship-that was obviously beyond existing tech nology-but a more realistic mission. In 1989 I had videotaped Voyager 2's encounter with Neptune and watched the drama of robotic exploration over and over again. I started to wonder whether we could do something similar with Alpha Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun. Everyone seemed to agree that manned flight to the stars was out of the question, if not permanently then for the indefinitely foreseeable future. But surely we could do something with robotics. And if we could figure out a theoretical way to do it, how far were we from the actual technology that would make it happen? In other words, what was the state of our interstellar technology today, those concepts and systems that might translate into a Voyager to the stars? Finding answers meant talking to people inside and outside of NASA. I was surprised to learn that there is a large literature of interstellar flight. Nobody knows for sure how to propel a space craft fast enough to make the interstellar crossing within a time scale that would fit the conventional idea of a mission, but there are candidate systems that are under active investigation. Some of this effort begins with small systems that we'll use near the Earth and later hope to extend to deep space missions.

3D-Spectroscopy of Dense Stellar Populations
Author: Tim-Oliver Husser
Publisher: Universitätsverlag Göttingen
ISBN: 3863950925
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
Globular clusters are gravitationally bound collections of hundreds of thousands of stars that are almost as old as the Universe itself. Although they have been studied for hundreds of years, their formation and evolution is not yet fully understood. We want to fi nd answers to some of the major questions by investing a large amount of observing time with MUSE, the upcoming 2nd generation instrument for ESOś Very Large Telescope. In this thesis I discuss the current state of research on globular clusters as well as the possibilities of this new instrument. Numerical methods for the analysis of MUSE data are presented, including a comprehensive library of synthetic spectra that has been created just for this purpose. The application of these methods to both synthetic and real data is discussed with particular emphasis on a "dry run" that has been conducted for MUSE. Finally, a potential program for the observation of globular clusters is presented.
