Book Description
"The modern-day Chinese and U.S. economies have been locked in an uncomfortable embrace since the late 1970s. Although the relationship was built on a set of mutual benefits, in recent years it has taken on the trappings of an unstable co-dependence. This insightful book lays bare the pitfalls of the current China-U.S. economic relationship, highlighting disputes over trade policies and intellectual property rights, sharp contrasts in leadership styles, the role of the Internet, and the political economyof social stability. Stephen Roach, a firsthand witness to the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s and an economics expert who likely knows more about U.S.-China trade than any other Westerner, details how the two economies mirror one another. Co-dependency augments the tensions and suspicions between the two nations, but there is reason to hope for less antagonism and rivalry, the author maintains. In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, both economies face structural changes that present opportunities for mutual benefit. Roach describes a way out of the escalating tensions of co-dependence and insists that the Next China offers much for the Next America--and vice versa"--

Book Description
In Unchecked and Unbalanced, Arnold Kling provides a blueprint for those who are skeptical of political and financial elitism. At the heart of Kling's argument is the growing discrepancy between two phenomena: knowledge is becoming more diffuse, while political power is becoming more concentrated. Kling sees this knowledge/power discrepancy at the heart of the financial crisis of 2008. Financial industry executives and regulatory officials lacked the ability to fathom the complexity of the system that had emerged. And, in response, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke, said that they required still more power, including $700 billion to purchase "toxic assets" from banks. Kling warns that increased concentration of power is a problem, not a panacea, for our modern world and suggests reforms designed to curb the growth of government and allow citizens greater control over the allocation of public goods. Book Description
The symptoms of schizophrenia have generated interest for more than two centuries. How are they produced? Where do they come from? In this highly stimulating book, Dr Locke proposes a new basic mechanism to account for many of the findings in schizophrenia. His ideas are based on observations and experiments at a State Psychiatric Hospital where he was the director of a Neurological Unit for ten years. He was struck by an outstanding sign of schizophrenia which had not attracted attention in the classical literature. Schizophrenia patients, he noticed, were too alert, too attentive. If this hyperawareness or widespread unfocussed attention is the result of excessive arousal, Dr Locke reasoned it would make sense to look into the vestibular system which is alleged to be one of the most effective contributions to the ascending reticular activation system. This original view of schizophrenia is attractive because it is creative, supported by a wide range of evidence and above all testable. Unbalanced: A View From the Vestibule will be of interest not only to psychiatrists, neuroscientists and mental health workers, but also to anyone interested in how the human mind works.

Book Description
WILEY-INTERSCIENCE PAPERBACK SERIES The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. "[This book] provides an excellent discussion of the methodology and interpretation of linear models analysis of unbalanced data (data having unequal numbers of observations in the subclasses), generally without matrices?the author does an excellent job of emphasizing the more practical nature of the book. Highly recommended for graduate and undergraduate libraries." â?"Choice "This is a very comprehensive text, aimed at both students studying linear-model theory and practicing statisticians who require an understanding of the model-fitting procedures incorporated in statistical packages? This book should be considered as a text for college courses as it provides a clearly presented and thorough treatment of linear models. It will also be useful to any practicing statistician who has to analyze unbalanced data, perhaps arising from surveys, and wishes to understand the output from model-fitting procedures and the discrepancies in analysis from one recognized package to another." â?"Biometrics This newly available and affordably priced paperback version of Linear Models for Unbalanced Data offers a presentation of the fundamentals of linear statistical models unique in its total devotion to unbalanced data and its emphasis on the up-to-date cell means model approach to linear models for unbalanced data. Topic coverage includes cell means models, 1-way classification, nested classifications, 2-way classification with some-cells-empty data, models with covariables, matrix algebra and quadratic forms, linear model theory, and much more.

Book Description
Grid converters increasingly affect power system operation due to the increasing share of renewable energy sources and less conventional power plants. This shift in power generation leads to converter-dominated weak grids, which show critical stability phenomena but also enable converters to contribute to grid stability and voltage support. This thesis presents critical parts of converter controls and describes models to assess their characteristics. These models are used to derive design criteria and dedicated stability analysis methods for grid converter controls.
