Author: Frank Broeze
Publisher: Liverpool University Press
ISBN: 1786949261
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
This volume seeks to critically review the contemporary state of maritime historiography, as it stands at the volume’s publication date of 1995. The volume is comprised of thirteen essays, each focused on the recent research into the maritime concerns of a particular geographical location, listed as follows: Australia; Canada; China; Denmark; Germany; Greece; Ibero-America; India; the Netherlands; the Ottoman Empire; Spain; the United States; and a final chapter concerning historians and maritime labour in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. One concern made evident by the collection is the lack of stable identity and cohesive aims within maritime history, the subject holds many conflicting definitions and concepts. The purpose of this volume is to explore the recent developments in maritime history, plus the growth of scholarly interest, to provide a ‘beacon and stimulus for future work’ and to clearly direct and define maritime historiography toward a solid position in the field of history.

Publisher: Teach Yourself
ISBN: 1444175866
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
Get Started in Latin is the ebook and audio course to follow if you are taking your first steps in Latin, whether classical or medieval. Follow a Latin story set in a medieval monastery, where conspiracy unfolds in the cloisters, Vikings threaten to attack, and young lovers set out to unmask the villains. And discover the principal authors of classical Latin and read quotations from their writings. The audio contains readings of the story and of the classical authors. All the Latin we are left with now are seemingly lifeless letters on a page or in stone. In its day Latin was a language to be heard: readings in the ancient world were recitals and performances - poems, speeches, histories even. So while you may not need the audio to learn the ABC of the language, you do if you want to experience and enjoy Latin to the full. And how do we know how it sounded? Find out inside. The free audio for this course is also available to download to the Teach Yourself Library app, or to stream on library.teachyourself.com. The ideal course to learn Latin if you're a beginner, this new edition includes: An introduction to classical Latin authors - ancient writers like Cicero, Tacitus and Virgil A medieval story : a Latin 'whodunnit' - practising each new point of language Grammatical explanations and vocabulary support in each unit Lots of exercises - to practise each new point of language Discover how Latin evolved through the centuries - and its immense impact on English Listen to the story and the classical authors on audio - to experience the sound of Latin "The best part of the book is its lively narrative...As carefully graded passages [the story sections] are much more useful than another collection I have used. Latin to GCSE Part 1
Author: Henry Cullen
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1474285627
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
A companion to Bloomsbury's popular two-volume Greek to GCSE, this is the first course for Latin students that directly reflects the curriculum in a clear, concise and accessible way. Enhanced by colour artwork and text features, the books support the new OCR specification for Latin (first teaching 2016) as well as meeting the needs of later students, both at university and beyond. Written by two experienced school teachers, one also an examiner, the course is based on a keen understanding of what pupils find difficult, concentrating on the essentials and on the explanation of principles in both accidence and syntax: minor irregularities are postponed and subordinated so that the need for rote learning is reduced. User-friendly, it also gives pupils a firm foundation for further study. Part 1 covers the basics and is self-contained, with its own reference section. It outlines the main declensions, a range of active tenses and a vocabulary of 275 Latin words to be learned. Pupil confidence is built up by constant consolidation of the material covered. After the preliminaries, each chapter concentrates on stories with one source or subject: the Fall of Troy, the journeys of Aeneas, the founding of Rome and the early kings, providing an excellent introduction to Roman culture alongside the language study.
