Book Description
"From the day it was realized that the U.S.S. Cyclops would never arrive at her destination, much attention has been drawn to the subject of this colossal collier. Many have been curious because of the mystery surrounding her disappearance in the area known as the Bermuda Triangle. Others are interested in naval history and some because of a family connection to a member of her crew. This study provides an objective look at the U.S.S. Cyclops; escorting readers through the multitude of stacks of documentation of this yet-to-be solved case. Conflicting points of view are presented. That is especially the case with the story about the Cyclops' only commanding officer, George W. Worley. The U.S.S. Cyclops served a vital role in the Navy, in peace as in war. As a fuel ship the Cyclops did not offer her crews glamorous tours of duty. Being assigned to the U.S.S. Cyclops meant hard work, long days, and the handling of thousands of tons of coal. Most days on board the U.S.S. Cyclops have been accounted for within these pages. Dates on which only negligible activity, such as when clothes washing occurred, have not been included. In a few instances, log book pages for a few dates appear to have been lost. The Cyclops logs from January 1, 1918 and later were likely on board the ship when she was lost. Events related to the ship beyond December 31, 1917 have been found in-part within the log books of other vessels or from other documentation. Information pertaining to War Risk Insurance and pilgrimages to France are included as they affected surviving family members. This is as much a finding aid for most information related to the U.S.S. Cyclops as it is a narrative history. As much as possible, each source used in this study has been identified in detail as to permit further research by the reader." -- from cover.

The Sailor's Bookshelf
Author: James Stavridis
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1682477169
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
Admiral Stavridis, a leader in military, international affairs, and national security circles, shares his love of the sea and some of the sources of that affection. The Sailor's Bookshelf offers synopses of fifty books that illustrate the history, importance, lore, and lifestyle of the oceans and of those who “go down to the sea in ships.” Stavridis colors those descriptions with glimpses of his own service—“sea stories” in popular parlance—that not only clarify his choices but show why he is held in such high esteem among his fellow sailors. Divided into four main categories—The Oceans, Explorers, Sailors in Fiction, and Sailors in Non-Fiction—Admiral Stavridis’ choices will appeal to “old salts” and to those who have never known the sights of the ever-changing seascape nor breathed the tonic of an ocean breeze. The result is a navigational aid that guides readers through the realm of sea literature, covering a spectrum of topics that range from science to aesthetics, from history to modernity, from solo sailing to great battles. Among these eclectic choices are guides to shiphandling and navigation, classic fiction that pits man against the sea, ecological and strategic challenges, celebrations of great achievements and the lessons that come with failure, economic competition and its stepbrother combat, explorations of the deep, and poetry that beats with the pulse of the wave. Some of the included titles are familiar to many, while others, are likely less well-known but are welcome additions to this encompassing collection. Admiral Stavridis has chosen some books that are relatively recent, and he recommends other works which have been around much longer and deserve recognition.

A Passage to Oblivion
Author: Gian J Quasar
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780988850552
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 294
Book Description
Clue after clue laid down a disturbing trail for investigators that culminated not in the finding of the body of the crime but in the most remarkable and frustrating disappearance in nautical history- the vanishing of a 20,000 ton ship and 309 crew. The only logical answer seemed hard to believe- betrayal. The difference between the fated voyage of HMS Bounty and U.S.S. Cyclops may be that the Cyclops was a complete success. The US Navy, though they searched for years, never found Cyclops' Pitcairn. But is it true that no trace was ever found of the great ship? Gian Quasar, considered the foremost investigator of popular mysteries, dug into the voluminous records to rediscover what had so disturbed the Navy in 1918. Like with story of Flight 19, Quasar pulls the Cyclops from the clutches of Bermuda Triangle legend to reveal that the Navy was justified to suspect mutiny and treason. Now 95 years later, for the first time, the story of what could be America's greatest sea betrayal is told, the events leading up to and after the last voyage of the Cyclops. The US Navy still boasts it has never suffered a mutiny, and they may still do so. But after reading A Passage to Oblivion, we may well ask if this nation has not suffered something far more intriguing and tragic than that which befell the king's Bounty.

The 50 Greatest Shipwrecks
Author: Richard Jones
Publisher: Pen and Sword History
ISBN: 1399008013
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
When you think of a shipwreck, what image springs to mind? A tall sailing ship on the rocks, or perhaps the sinking Titanic surrounded by lifeboats? Historian Richard M. Jones has put together 50 stories of lost ships throughout history that are among the most important, infamous and in some cases tragic ships in the whole of history. When did two liners collide and lead to one of the greatest rescues in history? How did a Scotsman become an American hero against his own country? Which warship sank with gold bullion on board during the Second World War? This book tells the story of these fascinating cases plus many more, explores the largest shipwrecks, the treasure wrecks and the ones that are talked about still as the most famous. Starting at the tiny island of Alderney in 1592, we take a journey through history, through the First and Second World Wars, into the age of the passenger ferry and finally to the modern day migrant issues in the Mediterranean Sea. Never before have these fifty wrecks come together in a book that really brings home to the reader just how many lost vessels there are, how deadly many can be and what this teaches us today about our own history.

Disasters and Tragic Events [2 volumes]
Author: Mitchell Newton-Matza
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1610691660
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 846
Book Description
From the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 to the Sandy Hook school massacre of 2012, this two-volume encyclopedia surveys tragic events—natural and man-made, famous and forgotten—that helped shape American history. Tragedies and disasters have always been part of the fabric of American history. Some gave rise to reactions that profoundly influenced the nation. Others dominated public consciousness for a moment, then disappeared from collective memory. Organized chronologically, Disasters and Tragic Events examines these moments, covering both the familiar and the obscure and probing their immediate and long-term effects. Unlike other works that concentrate on a particular type of disaster, for example, weather- or medicine-related tragedies, this two-volume encyclopedia has no such limits. Its entries range from natural disasters, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, to civic disturbances, environmental disasters, epidemics and medical errors, transportation accidents, and more. The work is a perfect supplement for history classes and will also prove of great interest to the general reader.
