Book Description
'An active pleasure to read' Mail on Sunday Harold Wilson's famous reference to 'white heat' captured the optimistic spirit of a society in the midst of breathtaking change. From the gaudy pleasures of Swinging London to the tragic bloodshed in Northern Ireland, from the intrigues of Westminster to the drama of the World Cup, British life seemed to have taken on a dramatic new momentum. The memories, images and colourful personalities of those heady times still resonate today: mop-tops and mini-skirts, strikes and demonstrations, Carnaby Street and Kings Road, Harold Wilson and Edward Heath, Mary Quant and Jean Shrimpton, Enoch Powell and Mary Whitehouse, Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger. In this wonderfully rich and readable historical narrative, Dominic Sandbrook looks behind the myths of the Swinging Sixties to unearth the contradictions of a society caught between optimism and decline.

Book Description
"Crowned Designer of the Year by British Vogue in 1970, Bill Gibb [1943-1988) was set to become a major name in fashion history. Famous for his love of romance, Gibb's flamboyant flights of fancy appeared revolutionary in the 1970s and still have a resonance today. But his career came to an abrupt end in 1988, when the fashion industry lost one of its most adventurous and exciting designers. It seems a fitting time to review Gibb's contribution to fashion." "This stunning book explores the work of a prolific and, at his best, truly visionary designer: his background and the enduring themes that inspired his designs. Gibb's fashion philosophy is revealed through the words of the designer, its effect on the fashion world seen through the eyes of those who knew him: industry professionals, family and friends. Gibb was a free spirit, an intuitive designer who broke the rules, not only in terms of design but also concepts and attitudes. Ahead of his time, he was aware of the value of celebrity endorsement and dressed rock stars, actresses and film stars from Rod Stewart to Bianca Jagger and Elizabeth Taylor." "It sets up a dialogue between the fashion industry of the 1970s and the fashion world of today. Much of Gibb's output verged on couture. 'I strove for the top and achieved it within ten years', he once said. Illustrated with his detailed drawings, intimate reportage-style snapshots, previously unseen catwalk images and fashion plates by leading photographers, this book is testimony to an individualist, faithful to his own design principles, who believed consummately in his 'rare gift ... to design beautiful clothes'."--BOOK JACKET.

I'm constantly amazed at the different aspects of my character they choose to reveal.' This stunning collection of photographs explores Twiggy's extraordinary life in front of the camera. Launched with a famous haircut by Leonard and photographs by Barry Lategan in 1966, Twiggy was the world's first supermodel. For the next four years she helped define 'Swinging London' and she remains today an internationally recognised name and face. In her own words, Twiggy describes the distinguished photographers with whom she has collaborated-including Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Douglas Kirkland, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Norman Parkinson, Melvin Sokolsky, Bert Stern, Bryan Adams and many others-and her memories of working with them. Published to celebrate her 60th birthday, this beautiful book documents her life through photographs. Book Description
2018 James Beard Foundation Book of the Year | 2018 James Beard Foundation Book Award Winner inWriting | Nominee for the 2018 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Nonfiction | #75 on The Root100 2018 A renowned culinary historian offers a fresh perspective on our most divisive cultural issue, race, in this illuminating memoir of Southern cuisine and food culture that traces his ancestry—both black and white—through food, from Africa to America and slavery to freedom. Southern food is integral to the American culinary tradition, yet the question of who "owns" it is one of the most provocative touch points in our ongoing struggles over race. In this unique memoir, culinary historian Michael W. Twitty takes readers to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine. From the tobacco and rice farms of colonial times to plantation kitchens and backbreaking cotton fields, Twitty tells his family story through the foods that enabled his ancestors’ survival across three centuries. He sifts through stories, recipes, genetic tests, and historical documents, and travels from Civil War battlefields in Virginia to synagogues in Alabama to Black-owned organic farms in Georgia. As he takes us through his ancestral culinary history, Twitty suggests that healing may come from embracing the discomfort of the Southern past. Along the way, he reveals a truth that is more than skin deep—the power that food has to bring the kin of the enslaved and their former slaveholders to the table, where they can discover the real America together. Book Description
Life is very complex and intricate. Every decision we make is made for a reason, either consciously or, more often than not, subconsciously. This includes your choice of school friends, your hobbies, your career pathway, your car (not just because it is the cheapest), your life partner or partners, the foods you like and don’t like, and your tastes in music. These are decisions we have all made throughout our life, some we have been helped with and others we have made alone. Many people like sport; a majority of them are football supporters! They choose their team in many different ways, guided by their family or friends (I told my two children, “There are ninety-two teams in England. Support any one of the ninety-one of them. If you support the ninety-second, out you go.”) or swayed by the media (more so these days). The team your friends follow and obviously the local team to where you live, that is usually the team you follow. When I decided that football would be my sport of choice, I had no family to guide me (no one was interested in football), and there was no local league team for the majority of my childhood. Birmingham was over twenty miles from Colwall, and Reading over twenty miles away from Newbury. And for the year I was in Nottingham, there were two teams to worry about, and so I had ninety-two league teams to choose from! Which one should I choose, and why? Because the one thing I realized even at a young age is that the team you choose is your team for life! That is unless you are a glory hunter, which certainly happened with some people I knew and went to school with in Nottingham. They were supporters of many different teams when I moved away from Nottingham in the mid-1970s, but when I came back to Nottingham in the early 1980s, they were all “loyal” Forest supporters!

Book Description
From the reviews of Nazi Germany "The best one-volume history of the Third Reich available. It fills a void which has existed for a long time and it will probably become the basic text for generations of students."-Walter Laqueur "An indispensable, compellingly readable political, military and social history of the Third Reich."-Publishers Weekly From the reviews of History of an Obsession "This is truly a significant work, for Fischer gives a balanced account of a complex subject, making it painfully clear just how Germany became capable of genocide." - Booklist "Fischer writes with a clear mastery of both primary and secondary sources. Synthesizing a wide spectrum of literature into a fine, scholarly work." - Library Journal No decade since the end of World War II has been as seminal in its historical significance as the 1960s. That stormy period unleashed a host of pent-up social and generational conflicts that had not been experienced since the Civil War: intense racial and ethnic strife, cold war terror, the Vietnam War, counter-cultural protests, controversial social engineering, and political rancor. Numerous studies on various aspects of these issues have been written over the past 35 years, but few have so successfully integrated the many-sided components into a coherent, synthetic, and reliable book that combines good storytelling with sound scholarly analysis. The main materials covered will be the Kennedy and Johnson presidencies; the Civil Rights movement; the Vietnam War and the protest it generated; the New Left, student radicals, and Black student militancy; and, finally, the counter-cultural side of the 60s: hippies, sex and Rock 'n' Roll.
