Book Description
Turbulent Navier-Stokes computational results are presented for an advanced diamond wing semispan model at low-speed, high-lift conditions. The numerical results are obtained in support of a wind-tunnel test that was conducted in the National Transonic Facility at the NASA Langley Research Center. The model incorporated a generic fuselage and was mounted on the tunnel sidewall using a constant-width non-metric standoff. The computations were performed at to a nominal approach and landing flow conditions. The computed high-lift flow characteristics for the model in both the tunnel and in free-air environment are presented. The computed wing pressure distributions agreed well with the measured data and they both indicated a small effect due to the tunnel wall interference effects. However, the wall interference effects were found to be relatively more pronounced in the measured and the computed lift, drag and pitching moment. Although the magnitudes of the computed forces and moment were slightly off compared to the measured data, the increments due the wall interference effects were predicted reasonably well. The numerical results are also presented on the combined effects of the tunnel sidewall boundary layer and the standoff geometry on the fuselage forebody pressure distributions and the resulting impact on the configuration longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics.Ghaffari, Farhad and Biedron, Robert T. and Luckring, James M.Langley Research CenterNAVIER-STOKES EQUATION; SEMISPAN MODELS; TURBULENT FLOW; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; LIFT; LOW ASPECT RATIO WINGS; COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS; AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS; WALL FLOW; FUSELAGES; AERODYNAMIC INTERFERENCE; PITCHING MOMENTS; PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION; FOREBODIES

Book Description
A small-scale, instrumented research aircraft was flown to investigate the flight characteristics of inflatable wings. Ground tests measured the static structural characteristics of the wing at different inflation pressures, and these results compared favorably with analytical predictions. A research-quality instrumentation system was assembled, largely from commercial off-the-shelf components, and installed in the aircraft. Initial flight operations were conducted with a conventional rigid wing having the same dimensions as the inflatable wing. Subsequent flights were conducted with the inflatable wing. Research maneuvers were executed to identify the trim, aerodynamic performance, and longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the vehicle in its different wing configurations. For the angle-of-attack range spanned in this flight program.

Book Description
In "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" Argyris Panaras examines the fundamentals of vortices and shock waves, aerodynamic estimation of lift and drag, airfoil theory, boundary layer control, and high-speed, high-temperature flow. Individual chapters address vortices in aerodynamics, transonic and supersonic flows, transonic/supersonic aircraft configurations, and high-supersonic/hypersonic flows, beginning with definitions and historical data, and then describing present-day status and current research challenges. Emphasis is given to flow control, to the evolution of flight vehicle shapes as flight speed has increased, and to discoveries that enabled breakthrough developments in flight. The book: examines why various equations and technologies were developed, explains major contributors in areas such as vortices and aircraft wakes, drag buildup, sonic boom, and shock wave-boundary layer interactions, among others, and helps readers apply concepts from the material to their own projects. Archival and encyclopedic, "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" is a superb reference for aeronautical students and professionals alike. Although most beneficial to readers with a working knowledge of aerodynamics, it is accessible to anyone with an introductory understanding of the field.
