Book Description
A nation's collective memory does not simply exist. It is created. But what factors influence its form and content? And what roles do the news media play in fashioning our collective memory? Here Jill A. Edy observes the process of negotiating a meaning for the past as it unfolds in the news, exploring the ways that news practices, the relationships between actors who make the news, the expectations of news audiences, and the impact of current events affect the development of collective memories in a mass society.Using the 1965 Watts riots and the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago as case studies, Edy creates a useful framework for understanding how, over time, conflicting versions of events are resolved, what forms the resolutions take, and how those resolutions influence the representation of current news stories. Anyone who is interested in political communication and the role of media in public culture will find a wealth of insights in this valuable new book.

Haunted Histories and Troubled Pasts
Author: Amanda Howell
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501394428
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 281
Book Description
Haunted Histories and Troubled Pasts speaks to how a transnational array of recent screen entertainments participate, through horror, in public discourses of history, the social and creative work of reshaping popular understanding of our world through the lens of the past. Contemporary film and television – and popular screen cultures more generally – are distinguished by their many and varied engagements with history, including participation in worldwide movements to reconcile past losses and injuries with present legacies. The chapters in this collection address themselves to 21st-century screen horror's participation in this widespread fascination with and concern for the historical - its recurrent reimagining of the relation between the past and present, which is part of its inheritance from the Gothic. They are concerned with the historical work of horror's spectral occupations, its visceral threats of violence and its capacity for exploring repressed social identities, as well as the ruptures and impositions of colonization and nationhood. Trauma is a key theme in this book, examined through themes of war and genocide, ghostly invasions, institutionalized abuse, apocalyptic threat and environmental destruction. These persistent, fearful reimaginings of the past can take many lurid – sometimes tritely generic – forms. Together, these chapters explore and reflect upon horror's ability to speak through them to the unspoken of history, to push the boundaries and probe the fault-lines and ideological impositions of received historical narratives – while reminding us that history and the historical imagination persist as sites of contention.

The Emotional Toolbox
Author: Daniel A. Bochner Ph.D.
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1456896458
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 451
Book Description
In The Emotional Toolbox, Dr. Bochner provides a fresh and accessible perspective on the most common issues of psychotherapy and mental health. This book is a Manual for Mental Health and is organized as an owners manual for the relational world, which Dr. Bochner calls the great life machine. Unlike other manuals that focus on all brand-new systems functioning perfectly, however, The Emotional Toolbox recognizes the various types of likely breakdown that occur over time and focuses intently on helping you bring yourself to full potential. In essence, The Emotional Toolbox is the Introduction to Psychology people truly want and need, even though it does not include the typical Psych 101 articles on rats in mazes, pellet-pecking pigeons, cat-zapping contraptions, or old tired theories no longer useful in modern day psychotherapy. Instead, in this Manual the reader finds and feasts on expert knowledge regarding the intricacies of human interaction, the vagaries of couple and family life, and the ins and outs of mental health diagnosis. Dr. Bochners Emotional Toolbox addresses the most commonly encountered issues of life, explains emotional difficulties and interpersonal communication at a level where the reader can feel personally understood, and offers solutions and redemption where people struggle most.

From the civilizations of the American Southwest to the Mesolithic of Central Europe, the contributors examine violence in hunter-gatherer as well as state societies from both the New and Old Worlds. Drawing upon cross-cultural analyses, archaeological data, and skeletal remains, this collection of papers offers evidence of domestic violence, homicide, warfare, cannibalism, and ritualized combat among ancient peoples. Beyond the physical evidence, various models and explanations for violence in the past are explored.

Past and Power: Public Policies on Memory. Debates, from Global to Local
Author: Jordi Guixé
Publisher: Edicions Universitat Barcelona
ISBN: 8447539938
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 489
Book Description
The public authorities have not successfully resolved the management of the traumatic memory of the wars, dictatorships and massacres to which the European project was always intended to be a counterpoint. The conflict of memories and the public discourses about the past are latent on ideological, political and cultural levels. However, if in the past the conflict concerning memories tended to develop inside the borders of countries, it has now leapt into the European arena. This has also led to the confrontation and questioning of the great narratives established in the common memory, especially with countries of the East joining the European Union. Each community, group or nation maintains common memories that do not always fit in or converge with a general overall account. The origins of the UB Solidarity Foundation’s European Observatory on Memories lie in these debates, and through this book — which includes the contributions of specialists in multiple disciplines and the speeches that were given at the first international symposium, “Memory and Power: A Transnational Perspective” — it hopes to present some of the key challenges that this conflict of memories has in store for us in the present and in the future.
