Book Description
The 20th Anniversary of a Learned Society is a momentous event in its af fairs, and it is fitting that, in the Appendix to the Proceedings of the 20th An niversary Meeting, the history of the Society for Drug Research is outlined. The aim of the Society, to encourage an interdisciplinary approach and to act as an organisation freed from any specific scientific branch of knowledge, was achieved and is exemplified by the publication of these proceedings of the Anniversary Meeting held at the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. In only two other cases have the Society's proceedings been published, main taining the original decision and policy to allow membership to enjoy com munications from those who may not have agreed to speak had publication been mandatory. The papers presented at the Anniversary Meeting covered a wide range of scientific disciplines, and it is fitting that work of such calibre should have been published under the able editorship of Stuart and Bryan Walker. They should prove invaluable to those who are interested in Drug Research.

Book Description
Pharmacology is a rapidly progressing area of biomedical research, with new developments surfacing at regular intervals, constantly revolutionizing drug therapy for disease states. The interaction of this discipline with other biomedical sciences has opened up new vistas and opportunities in drug design and development. Basic and clinical concepts in the mechanism and use of drugs are carefully integrated into hypotheses, which are aimed at the maintenance of a critical balance between health and disease. Current Trends in Pharmacology is a comprehensive collection of topics highly significant in the current health scenario. The book comprises a combination of articles in clinical and experimental pharmacology and toxicology from the viewpoint of both basic and clinical scientists. It also details recent developments in the basic aspects of drug action in some very relevant disease states like hypertension, atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, stroke, tuberculosis, hospital acquired pneumonia, and cancer. It also highlights the applied issues relating to rational use of drugs. The contributing authors are leading experts in their respective fields and have presented the topics in a lucid and comprehensive manner

Book Description
Improving and Accelerating Therapeutic Development for Nervous System Disorders is the summary of a workshop convened by the IOM Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders to examine opportunities to accelerate early phases of drug development for nervous system drug discovery. Workshop participants discussed challenges in neuroscience research for enabling faster entry of potential treatments into first-in-human trials, explored how new and emerging tools and technologies may improve the efficiency of research, and considered mechanisms to facilitate a more effective and efficient development pipeline. There are several challenges to the current drug development pipeline for nervous system disorders. The fundamental etiology and pathophysiology of many nervous system disorders are unknown and the brain is inaccessible to study, making it difficult to develop accurate models. Patient heterogeneity is high, disease pathology can occur years to decades before becoming clinically apparent, and diagnostic and treatment biomarkers are lacking. In addition, the lack of validated targets, limitations related to the predictive validity of animal models - the extent to which the model predicts clinical efficacy - and regulatory barriers can also impede translation and drug development for nervous system disorders. Improving and Accelerating Therapeutic Development for Nervous System Disorders identifies avenues for moving directly from cellular models to human trials, minimizing the need for animal models to test efficacy, and discusses the potential benefits and risks of such an approach. This report is a timely discussion of opportunities to improve early drug development with a focus toward preclinical trials.

Book Description
This volume of Pharmacochemistry Library comprises the text of invited lectures presented at the 11th Noordwijkerhout-Camerino Symposium Trends in Drug Research, held in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, from 11-15 May 1997. In the programme attention has been given to the generation of new biological target systems and the generation of new lead molecules, with presentations on e.g. combinatorial chemistry, compound libraries, database search, high throughput screening and molecular biology. Other topics discussed were the perspectives for new medicines for the gastro-intestinal tract, the major developments in the search for effective anti-HIV drugs and new aspects in synthetic approaches. In a special session three topics which currently draw much attention were discussed: How to deal with the major problem of resistance against antimirobial agents? Can the apoptosis mechanism be used as a drug target? Is the newly observed phenomenon of inverse agonism a general principle and has it consequences for drug development (and use?)
