Excerpt from The Treatment of Fractures: With Notes Upon a Few Common Dislocations The tracings of the Rontgen rays, which have been very gen erally used to illustrate the sites and the displacements of frac tures, have been the subject of careful study. Each tracing represents the combined interpretation of the plate made by skilled observers who were in every instance familiar with the clinical aspects of the case. The writings of many who have contributed their experience to the literature of fractures have been consulted. Those to whom I feel indebted for suggestions are mentioned in the section on Bibliography. References to literature are not made in the text. I take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the members of the Surgical Staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital for their courtesy in permitting me to study cases of fracture of the lower extremity in the wards of the hospital, and to Professor Thomas Dwight for the use of valuable anatomical material. Excerpt from The Treatment of Fractures, Vol. 2: Fractures of the Shaft The infinite variety of injuries which any war presents to the surgeon gives to military surgery a special interest and importance. The special interest and importance, in a surgical sense, of the great European War lies not so much in the fact that examples of every form of gross lesion of organs and limbs have been seen, for if we read the older writers we find little in the moderns that is new in this respect, but is to be found in the enormous mass of clinical material which has been presented to us and in the production of evidence sufficient to eliminate sources of error in determining important conclusions. For the first time also in any campaign the labours of the surgeon and the physician have had the aid of the bacteriologist, the pathologist, the physiologist, and indeed of every form of scientific assistance, in the solution of their respective problems. The clinician entered upon the great war armed with all the resources which the advances of fifty years had made available. If the surgical problems of modern war can be said not to differ sensibly from the campaigns of the past, the form in which they have been presented is certainly as different as are the methods of their solution. The achievements in the field of discovery of the chemist, the physicist, and the biologist have given the military surgeon an advantage in diagnosis and treatment which was denied to his predecessors, and we are able to measure the effects of these advantages when we come to appraise the results which have been attained. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Fractures and Dislocations The English language does not at this moment contain a single com plete treatise on Fractures and Dislocations. The two small volumes of Desault, and the one of Boyer, issued near the close of the last century, and translated into English early in this, may perhaps pro perly enough have been regarded as complete treatises at the time of their publication, but they certainly cannot be so considered now. The several chapters on Diseases and Injuries of the Bones, contained in the Decons Orales of Dupuytren, translated in 1846, and the Trea tise on Fractures in the Vicinity of Joints, and on Certain Forms of Accidental and Congenital Dislocations, by Robert Smith, are invaluable monographs, but neither of them claims to be anything more than a collection of occasional and miscellaneous papers. The writings of Amesbury and of Lonsdale relate only to fractures. Even the justly celebrated quarto of Sir Astley Cooper is no more than what its title plainly declares it to be, A Treatise on Dislocations and on Fractures of the Joints; but since the announcement of the present volume, a trans lation of Malgaigne's great and crowning work on Fractures and Dislocations has been commenced by Dr. Packard, of Philadelphia, and the first volume has been placed in the hands of the American profession. Should the remaining volume be rendered into English, the gap in our literature will be measurably filled. Under these circumstances I might scarcely have thought it worth while to continue my labors, already so near their completion, had it not seemed to me that Malgaigne, whose researches have been truly marvellous, had failed in some measure to give a just representation of the observations and improvements which have been made from time to time by my own countrymen.
