Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Topographical Drawing The want of a uniform system of topography in this country, has been the cause of much ambiguity in our topographical maps and plans. They have generally been made according to the taste or fancy of draughtsmen, without regard to any system whatever; and in consequence, are not well calculated to furnish that clear and precise information which is expected from them. With a desire to aid in establishing a uniform and permanent system of topography in this country, as well as to render some assistance to the cadets of the Military Academy, in this branch of their studies, the author has hastily compiled the following work. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Topographical Drawing Professor smith's Manual on Topographical Drawing first appeared in 1854, and was at that time the only American treatise of any extent on the subject. In the course of time, the plates became somewhat worn with age, and required to be redrawn. The text, also, although retaining its original value as a presentation of the subject, was found to differ materially in respect to the order of presentation from that adopted in our leading technical schools. It was thought, therefore, that some advantage might be gained, and the work better fitted for use as a text-book, by recasting it in accordance with what experience had shown to be a more acceptable arrangement of its several parts. The Editor, acting under the most liberal instructions from the Publishers, has endeavored to carry out the aims indicated above as thoroughly as time and other circumstances would per mit, and with the loyal purpose of preserving intact as much of the Author's text as possible. While it is quite certain that there is still much room for improvement in the work as now pre sented, it is hoped that the changes and additions in both the ten and plates will, in some degree, merit the approval of teachers. The intermingling of two separate writings on almost every page renders it inexpedient to attempt to point out all the changes which have been made. Nor is any discrimination necessary; instructors and others who are familiar with the original work will readily perceive the alterations. It may be stated in this connection, however, that the extensive additions which have been made in the first part of the work have been introduced in the hope of rendering it more serviceable to those who may not have the benefit of a teacher's guidance. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Topography, and Text-Book of Topographical Drawing: For the Use of Officers of the Army and Navy, Civil Engineers, Academies, Colleges, and Schools of Science He is indebted to many of his friends for kind suggestions, and thinks it proper to add some remarks by Mr. Noel Hope, who revised the work, on translating in general: Lamartine has somewhere said that, of all literary work, a translation is the toughest. The dictum is correct, for, not only must the translator have the idioms and genius of two languages at command, but, in order to insure perfection, he must be conversant with the subject under consideration. It is utterly impossible to avoid, in toto, giving a foreign aspect to the phraseology Of a rendering from the German, nu less a freedom be adopted which, in works relating to certain special sciences, is not permissible. Any one curious enough to compare the superabundance of words the German language luxuriates in, with the paucity of any other in this regard, need but to try his hand at a translation where science is concerned, to be convinced at once that the Teuton tongue is a grand old oak, the mere Off shoots Of which have become cognate dialects; and that, de spite whatever beauties may be claimed for them, they are, nevertheless, one and all, vastly inferior to the parent stem. Book Description
Excerpt from The Plane-Table and Its Use in Topographical Surveying: From the Papers of the United States, Coast Survey Topography is that branch of surveying by which any portion of the land surface of the earth is mapped in plan on a specified scale or proportion of nature. With the plane-table such a map is constructed on the ground by at once drawing upon the paper, which is Spread upon the table, the angles subtended by different objects, and determining by intersections their relative positions, instead of reading off the angles on graduated instruments and afterward plotting the lines by means of a protractor, as is done in other methods of surveying. The practice with the plane-table has in this respect a great advantage in directness and precision. The measurement of distances and of vertical angles are used, in conjunction with the method of intersections, to obtain all the data for representing the horizontal and vertical features on the map, which is drawn in the field with pencil, the details being filled in according to established conventional signs. The plane-table of the Coast Survey (see Sketch No. 30) is composed of a well-seasoned drawing-board, with beveled or rounded edges, about thirty inches in length, twenty-four in width, and three-quarters of an inch thick. It is commonly made of several pieces of white pine, tongued and grooved together, with the grain running in different directions to prevent warping. It is supported upon three strong brass arms, to which it is fastened by screws passing through4 treatise ON the plane-table.
