Book Description
Excerpt from Traveling in the Holy Land Through the Stereoscope It is the recognition of these two great facts that has determined the nature of this book. If stereographs are life-size spaces of three dimensions to the eyes, they Should be recognized as such and used as such. And if they may be to a greater or less degree, according as we use them, the realities to us, then they should be treated so as to make them realities as far as possible. And it seems the more we treat them as places, as Palestine itself, the more they become the same to us. Accordingly in the following pages are given such maps and information as will make this small volume serve the purpose of a guide-book, and at the same time, as I said at the beginning, I have tried to serve in it as a personal guide, saying everything in such a way as to constantly help and lead us to make this tour, to visit these stereographed scenes, as a tourist visits the actual scenes in Palestine. It will be found that on this stereoscopic tour one is carried to all the more important places in Palestine, and in the same order that a tourist might visit them; and in the more important sections the stereographed scenes are so connected that you may move from one position to another in such a way as to really make it a continuous journey. I urge upon all who have not actually visited Palestine, to give the closest attention to the maps and the descriptions, with the purpose of always keeping their bearings as they move from one place to another. Finally, we have Space for only a word on the impor tance of the land of Palestine, why we need to know it intimately, why we should stand in the very presence of its hills and valleys. Book Description
Excerpt from Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land: Impressions of Travel in Body and Spirit For a long time, in the hopefulness and confidence of youth, I dreamed of going to Palestine. But that dream was denied, for want of money and leisure. Then, for a long time, in the hardening strain of early manhood, I was afraid to go to Palestine, lest the journey should prove a disenchantment, and some of my religious beliefs be rudely shaken, per haps destroyed. But that fear was removed by a little voyage to the gates of death, where it was made clear to me that no belief is worth keeping unless it can bear the touch of reality. In that year of pain and sorrow, through a full surrender to the Divine Will, the hopefulness and confidence of youth came back to me. Since then it has been possible once more to wake in the morning with the feeling that the day might bring something new and wonderful and welcome, and to travel into the future with a whole and happy heart. Book Description
At the Chautauqua Institution in New York, visitors could walk down Palestine Avenue to "Palestine" and a model of Jerusalem, or along Morris Avenue to a scale model of the "Jewish Tabernacle." At the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904, a replica of Ottoman Jerusalem covered eleven acres, while today, 300 miles to the southeast, a seven-story-high Christ of the Ozarks stands above a modern re-creation of the Holy Land set in the Arkansas hills."--BOOK JACKET.
