Book Description
The Commercial Light Water Reactor-Tritium Extraction Facility (CLWR-TEF) is planned for location at the Savannah River Site (SRS) as part of the US Department of Energy CLWR tritium production alternative. This new facility will rely on processes and equipment that are significantly different from those proven in the past or currently in use at SRS. For instance, the CLWR-TEF reference design employs remote modules to provide an inert processing atmosphere, secondary confinement for tritium and the primary confinement for particulate contamination. The primary component of this modular system is the Transporter. A Transporter mock-up was developed to demonstrate concept feasibility of the required processing functions (sealing, attachment/alignment and materials handling). The module design, the seal door selection, and the planned test program are discussed.

Book Description
One alternative for tritium production being considered by the United States Department of Energy is the irradiation of Tritium Producing Burnable Absorber Rods (TPBARs) in a Commercial Light Water Reactor (CLWR). The reference design for the TPBARs uses a stainless steel sheath to decrease tritium permeation during irradiation. The subsequent activation of the stainless steel poses unique radiation related challenges to the tritium extraction process. The design utilizes a combined bridge crane and robot, modules with master-slave manipulators, and a unique transporter to exclude oxygen from the extraction process. The preliminary design for the material handling for both tritium extraction and waste removal is presented.

Book Description
As a part of the Department of Energy Tritium Readiness Program, the Tritium Extraction Facility (TEF) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) is preparing to receive the first shipment of irradiated Tritium Producing Burnable Absorber Rods (TPBARs) from the Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar Nuclear Plant. Tritium will be extracted from the TPBARs at the TEF. The spent TPBARs will be transported and disposed on site using the TEF Waste Container, designed and fabricated by Packaging Technology, Inc. This paper describes the TPBAR waste form, the TEF Waste Container to be used to store the waste, the operational sequence associated with management of the TBPAR waste form and the disposal facility at the SRS.

Book Description
The transport and cycling of tritium around nuclear facilities is reviewed with special emphasis on studies at the Savannah River Laboratory, Aiken, South Carolina. These studies have shown that the rate of deposition from the atmosphere, the site of deposition, and the subsequent cycling are strongly influenced by the compound with which the tritium is associated. Tritiated hydrogen is largely deposited in the soil, while tritiated water is deposited in the greatest quantity in the vegetation. Tritiated hydrogen is converted in the soil to tritiated water that leaves the soil slowly, through drainage and transpiration. Tritiated water deposited directly to the vegetation leaves the vegetation more rapidly after exposure. Only a small part of the tritium entering the vegetation becomes bound in organic molecules. However, it appears tht the existence of soil organic compounds with tritium concentrations greater than the equilibrium concentration in the associated water can be explained by direct metabolism of tritiated hydrogen in vegetation.
