Book Description
This text examines the dynamics of comprehensive civil service reform in Norway, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia. Since 1985, new public management (NPM) has evolved into an administrative orthodoxy. This book challenges the globalization thesis, which maintains that NPM is spreading rapidly around the world and generating convergence between civil service systems. The text argues that administrative reforms are transformed by a complex mixture of environmental pressure, policy features, and historical and institutional contexts, which would imply divergence and organizational variance. This book looks at three forms of tranformation of NPM. The first looks at the reform process, ideas, and content. The second looks at the effects of NPM reforms on political-administrative control, organized interests, policy capacity, and governmental culture. The third focuses on the implications of NPM for reform theory and democratic ideas.

Book Description
This book transcends current debate on government regulation by lucidly outlining how regulations can be a fruitful combination of persuasion and sanctions. The regulation of business by the United States government is often ineffective despite being more adversarial in tone than in other nations. The authors draw on both empirical studies of regulation from around the world and modern game theory to illustrate innovative solutions to this problem. Their ideas include an argument for the empowerment of private and public interest groups in the regulatory process and a provocative discussion of how the government can support and encourage industry self-regulation.

Book Description
This book provides research-based evidence within the Competing Values Framework to examine women's leadership styles, demonstrate their suitability for senior management positions, and show how employers must embrace women in leadership roles in order for their companies to be diversified and globalized. There is abundant proof that women in senior positions can make boardrooms "smarter" and companies more successful. And with a mastery of transformational and transactional roles, women possess a far larger behavioral repertoire to deal with stress than men—an advantage in any crisis situation. Even so, the glass ceiling still exists. Developing Women Leaders in Corporate America: Balancing Competing Demands, Transcending Traditional Boundaries focuses on the research-based Competing Values Framework (CVF), an organizing schema that enables leaders to assess empirically personal strengths and weaknesses, and analyze and manage organizational situations. Each chapter showcases concrete evidence of women's ability to succeed at the top levels of management and their skills that add value to employers, and then utilizes CVF to pinpoint specific challenges for women leaders and identify practical strategies for success. This book will enable women leaders and managers, employers, company executives, leadership development consultants, business educators, HR directors, and trainers to reduce stereotyping associated with women in male-populated careers. The author also explains why women, more than men, possess characteristics that help ensure success in international assignments.

Book Description
This book is based on a unique data set and assesses in comparative terms the public management reforms in the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Based on the assessments of administrative executives, the book compares the Nordic countries with the Anglo-Saxon, the Germanic, the Napoleonic and the East European group of countries. The book addresses the following questions: What reform trends are relevant in the public administrations of the Nordic countries? What institutional features characterize the state authorities in these countries? What characterizes the role identity, self-understanding, dominant values, and motivation of administrative executive in the Nordic countries? What characterizes reform processes, trends and content, what is the relevance of different types of management instruments, and what are their perceived effects and the perceived performance of the public administration? The book also examines how the different Nordic countries dealt with the financial crisis of 2008, and how the differences and similarities in their approaches can be explained.

Book Description
This book focuses on regulatory reforms and the autonomization and agencification of public sector organizations across Europe, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The central argument of the book is that regulation and agencification occur and perform in tandem. Comparative analysis on the processes, effects and implications of regulatory reform and the establishment of semi-independent agencies are undertaken, and the practice of trade-offs between political control and agency autonomy is explored. The contributors also discuss the challenges of fragmentation, coordination, 'joined-up' government and other government initiatives in the aftermath of the New Public Management movement and its focus on agencification. Finally, the complexity of deregulation/re-regulation, new emergent forms of regulation, control and auditing as well as reassertion of the centre are examined. Until now, there has been little attempt to link the study on regulation and regulatory reforms with that of autonomous central agencies. In this book the two fields are brought together. Autonomy and Regulation will find its audience amongst scholars and researchers working in the areas of political science, public administration and public management, organization theory, institutional analyses and comparative administration. It will also appeal to scholars and those directly involved in public sector and regulatory reforms including politicians and managers.

Book Description
Although, over time, numerous articles and books have been published on New Public Management (NPM), it is still being investigated with a sense of great urgency, as its effects, whether positive or negative, have not yet been fully gauged and comprehended. Given the rather controversial nature of the phenomenon of interest, the purpose of this edited volume is to re-invigorate and revisit the ongoing debate on NPM by providing a fresh perspective and novel insights into how NPM-driven changes have been approached and, more importantly, the effects they have produced in the context of Norway. The current volume comprises seven contributions penned by scholars and experts from all over Norway with a keen interest in NPM. Five of them are geared towards assessing the effects of NPM-style reforms on the Norwegian public healthcare sector in general and nursing in particular, one deals with the impacts of NPM on Norwegian primary and lower secondary education, and one traces the relationship between NPM and the most influential management accounting innovations of the last few decades. It is our profound hope that the book will trigger fruitful discussions and broaden our understanding of NPM and its effects by providing lessons from the empirical evidence presented in the different chapters. Captivating and instructive, it will be of great interest for all readers keeping an eye on NPM, including but not limited to students and scholars of public administration, practitioners and policymakers.
